Kirri - there are a few places like that in the Newcastle area, but at times I wish we had a "Brixton style" market up here.
Link HERE
Nice to have that ^^ direct place in your link, getting more and more rare these days.
as theatregirl says, I like reading your posts too, you'll have to hang around next year even if not doing the challenge!Deleted_User wrote: »Kirri- well done on the wt loss this bargain hunting must agree with you!
Edwardia - its shocking to think of what goes into food isnt it?... scary ...
Did go to farm shop this morning and spend £13 but bacon and mushroom sandwiches for lunch and sausage casserole for tea out of that plus some nice ham ...
am gonna try to start getting meat from local butchers/farm shop and see if that works out cheaper than the supermarkets ...
I know I was buying far too much chocolate before! Plus too much food in general.. weight loss and money saved so happy all round
I've found the farm shops can be better value, better choice and it seems nicer quality although depends on the farm but so nice to not have such rigid products like in the supermarket ie in looks and type of things available.
What they are doing to the food sold in supermarkets is shocking.. I would love to do all my shopping avoiding them but it's difficult. Maybe a challenge for next year for me though.. I'm sure there was a thread on it at the beginning of the year.Ms_Night_Ryder thanks for the heads up but I make my own dressings.
Deleted_User I agree with you and I'm glad I don't live in USA where they don't have to label genetically modified ingredients and can give cows growth hormones to make them produce more milk. We're actually lucky in the UK we have probably the toughest labelling in the world but in some areas it's still not great.
Also make my own dressings usually - as always have all those things in the fridge - I find the more things I make the better as I know what's in it and so usually has less crap in not to mention cheaper.
Re the milk, even UK milk has growth hormones doesn't it? It's not natural that's for sure! Whether it's part their feed or whatever else they give them, the poor cows are producing so much more milk these days than they ever used to, when you read the figures, it's shocking, am beginning to really hate the dairy industry even organic stuff which isn't quite so bad. Ahimsa is the only dairy I know of supplying milk from non destruct cows but limited supply area.
The food unwrapped series is interesting isn't it! I always buy unwaxed lemons but I've never seen an unwaxed orange? The formed ham was vile and as for the tinned fruit, I'd never buy that again!
I ended up getting the Daylesford eggs. Will probably pick up more locally though. Did you get the veg box from Ocado or from a scheme?
Just tried the Green & Black's crispy chocolate, omg I love it, not tried that variety before! It sneaked on the Ocado order... but they were on offer.
I've signed up to the Animal Aid vegan month... so will have to eat all my non vegan food before hand including the chocolate..
Just had a shock when preparing dinner - was washing an allotment sweetcorn when something fell in my hand - a woodlice! Threw it in the sink and screamed - have now put it out the window though.0 -
AFAIK American milk is banned from the UK because they use growth hormone and that's maybe why the Monterey Jack cheese in Sainsbury's is from the UK not USA. AFAIK UK and Irish cows not fed growth hormones but have to admit know nothing about non destruct cows. Cows have been bred to give more milk using high yield breeds for example. I haven't tried the Abel & Cole organic veg box yet this was organic from Ocado. Well done for doing the vegan month :T You can't eat the woodlice either
OH got me eggs from Sainsbos

Took Brother to Morries and got some cheap veg - hooray!!
There were loads of stuff bagged up at 35p, so bought:

Made a slow roasted beef dish yesterday. OH tried to find a chicken in the freezer (we have three in there somewhere) but found the beef first so we had that. Cooked it at 100 degrees for 5 hours with white and red wine, tinned toms, smoked garlic clove, red and white onion and worcester sauce. The kids had it for tea with roast veg and roast tatties. We were going to eat ours later but OH got called out at work and by the time he had finished we weren't wanting it so we had reduced sarnies from MS (10p) instead. So tonight we are having our meals from yesterday!
My little one asked for cottage pie for tea so have dug out the frozen batch I made last week and adding some waffles to it as not topped with potato and they are having that. Might squeeze in a pack of multi-grain baps I got from Morries today with a bit of luck.
Freezer is bursting because I went to Mr T on Friday night and found freezer BBQ bargains at 75p instead of £3 and 50p instead of £2. Chicken fillets, kebabs, salmon stick, finest burger, 4 monster burger pks, chinese ribs..... so I filled all the space we had by taking it out of the packaging and bagging it. Spent a tenner on about £40 of stuff. Love bargains.
Went back to docs on Friday and got given more antibiotics and stuff sent for tests. Still feeling ropey but I think they are working now. No idea what this bug is but I don't like it plus the tabs leave a horrid taste in my mouth all day long, yuk.

Hubby told me about the cheese and managed to bag 5 packs tonight (good heads up biscuitmad - you will need to get it tonight - the systems update overnight and it will be fixed most likely.)
Plus the lady was just reducing a pack of the steak that is on special offer at £5 - got it for £1.
Plus two salads for tomorrow for 63p each. Not a bad day.
My slow roast beef should be in front of me in a minute too - nom...
