Help!!

hi - i sold a vintage chanel handbag on ebay about three weeks ago, i have previously bought if off ebay from a woman who said it belonged to her grandmother and then her mother. i had no proof that it was authentic as in a receipt as the bag was 50 years old before serial numbers and stamps but i believed the lady i bought from and i had done a bit of research so i was happy to buy. i later needed the money so i sold it to a guy in france on ebay and made no profit. i had a message from him to say that he took it to chanel in paris to have the chain handle changed and they told him it was fake (not that a young girl would know) but he felt it was genuine and asked them to have it investigated. he has told me that chanel will seize the bag (his words) if it is fake, where do i stand in all of this, the lady i bought from is adament it is genuine but has no documentation, can i risk losing my money and the bag, please help, i know that ebay and paypal always back the buyer even though my listing stated no returns. advice welcome.

If they open an Ebay dispute, then you'll have to prove it's genuine.

If they open a Paypal dispute, then they'll have to prove it's fake. If the Chanel shop is willing to do this, then the bag will be destroyed, he'll get a refund, and you'll be out of pocket.

This is the problem when selling branded expensive items - you NEED to have proof that it's authentic, otherwise Ebay is not a suitable place to sell.

If I were you, I'd be asking him to return it, sending him the money for the return courier, and grovelling a lot!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Thanks for replying, thing is he's already handed it into chanel in paris and he said they will 'seize' it if its fake, can they do that? anyhow i cant prove its genuine,i only have my sellers word, and who knows, maybe it is fake, i didnt think fakes were around in 1959 when it was bought (alledgedly!!) i suppose its my own fault, for buying something that i didnt have prove of authenticity. i checked out the purse forum but they were so snotty and said i should pay a company in the US to authenticate it buy hey! why throw good money after bad. i suppose i'll have to write the money off, although i do think its genuine, so if chanel seize it i still have to refund him...just seems crazy, this has put me off ever selling on ebay!

check with Chanel Paris if somebody has actually taken a bag in, he's probably trying to con you.

meant to add...i thought that if these companies didnt supply written confirmation that the item was fake then there was nothing anyone could do - and i didnt think that these companies would put anything in writing, so how can they seize property without anything in writing...if you know what i mean?

Not actual fakes but copies in following article but if you search news and books archives people were faking chanel goods in 1959.

But from that article Chanel have appeared to authorise copies, so they now may have no right to confiscate them.
