I am truly fascinated by this thread.

I think the gadget is aa great leap forward in technology. A very clever device indeed and a hell of a lot for the money.

My question is When/How/Why do you need it?

Are you all avid film buffs?

Is it for watching whilst commuting to/from work?

Is it for taking to the beach. Whilst going camping/hiking? Or just sitting in the bedroom in peace.

I am not criticising but just wondering.

What exactly do YOu use yours for?

I am off to India in 8 days for 3-4 months, travelling .So this PMP will be excellent for me as the train journeys are incredible boring when you are sitting on the same train for 44 hours !!
And when the electric was off here last week ,i watched a dvd movie i had recorded on it.

Although the unit is a great geeky toy!, its quality on recording is not brilliant and the fact that is only records at 15fps on VGA mode is a let down (maybe someone will update firmware to fix this one day, maybe)

For copying and then playing back your own movies, music, divx etc.. its brilliant.

As a recording unit, I'd say its ok, but not quite DVD quality at least when recording, but still a great geeky toy.

Someone has stated that the ARCHOS is a lot better as a recording UNIT and I believe is not limited to 15fps in VGA mode, BUT also costs MORE £££

A REALLY SMART THING I Tried, was to hook up my Digital Camera, via its AV OUT to the AV IN on the Grundig and use my Digital Camera to record video instead of the small mobile type camera on the Grundig unit, and it worked brilliant, alot clearer and could use the optical zoom too.!!

    >>What I am now looking for is a small/portable digital camera with a brilliant lense and optical zoom to use to record alongside the Grundig. IF anyone can sugguest one please let me know.!!
A camera which the camera functions, but just a decent lense, optiocal zoom and an AV out is all I really need.

    Thanks

I use my as a portable external HDD / a player that can play xvid, divx, etc etc straight through your TV which is brialliant quality.
An MP3 player for journeys, and I guess watching movies whilst travelling (but rarely use this function) etc.
Bargain price and really simple to use, didnt look at the instructions once !!!
  • oh and bearing in mind I already have a

    http://www.kjglobal.co.uk/acatalog/DivX_Player_2.5__HDD.html

which does pretty much the same thing and you have to buy the 2.5" HDD for this, I bought a 100gig one for £50 (so it cost more)

Also the grundig has the additional features of a portable Screen / MP3 player, it truely is a bargain.

did you know you can also upgrade the HDD in this grundig (if you take it apart it is just a 2.5" laptop HDD inside.)

Ha ha you wouldnt have learned anything from the manual .
  • I use mine to watch dvds and music videos at work (on my breaks of course!). And on the bus, and the train, etc. The video camera's also been useful for uni presentations.
  • hey all.

I'm very seriously wanting to buy one of these, but i want it for long-haul travelling on flights. How long does the battery actually last when watching video?

Also, is there anywhere that sells accessories for it? i was thinking of getting a second battery or back up pack?

1 more thing, can you charge the player off the usb? does it have a similar charging point to an archos, or does it have a really weird specific socket? i have seen 'universal' battery packs that plug into usb points, and that have different charging adapters.

    any answers massively appreciated!!

The battery suppose to last around five and a half hours using video, havent tried that yet though. The battery is internal so cant see that a spare is possible. It looks like a pretty standard charging jack plug which either plugs into the unit itself or the cradle it sits in and I think I read somewhere that it's 6 volt as for charging from the usb, I think it does but I'm not 100% maybe someone else can maybe confirm that?
