  • Called LTSB to close mastercard account (took it originally for 6 mths @ 0% with no charges) - had already transferred the balance to Co-Op. I was transferred to the customer "retention" department but was ademant that I wanted to close the account. The lady I spoke with asked me what they could do to keep the account open (I still have a LTSB Current a/c - more fool me) and asked what she suggested - she asked if any of the original offers would work again.

I was offered 0% for 6 months, with no BT fee. Now the money has left the Co-Op and is back with LTSB. 8 mths between credit searches for the stooze pot - great - window now open to get a good cashback card.

It's worth letting them make the opening move...

Barclaycard: 5.9% for life of balance, 2% fee (but NEVER use for purchases - 19.9% )

Alliance & Leicester Visa: 2.9% for 5 months (2% fee)

Morgan Stanley Mastercard: 5.9% for 5 months (2% fee)

Egg "Aniversary Offer" 0% for 5 months (but 2.5% fee)

Just switched everything over to Egg and (hopefully) will have it almost cleared by April (fingers, toes & everything else crossed!):A
Could possibly do better by getting a new card but don't think my credit score has recovered sufficiently yet ;)

    Keep on saving!:D

P.S. Have found in past that ringing up and haggling often works, 'specially if you say you can get a better deal elsewhere.

I asked Lloyds TSB to close my card today after they had offered me 4.9% for 6 months with a 2.5% fee. They put me through to closures where they offered me 0% for 6 months. Couldn't get out of paying the 2.5% fee but this deal works for me.
  • Hi,

I've got a Virgin card at the mo which is on 0% til April 2007. However, the way finances are going I'll still probably have about £1500 on it by the time that comes around.

I was just wondering, when the 0% runs out, if they offer a new deal will that apply to the £1500 BT I've got on it already?

Or, would it be better to find another card to transfer the money to?

    Many thanks for your advice,

Usually applies to NEW transfers only, so you'd need to transfer the debt away from virgin and then back again but watch the charges/interest payable during that time on wherever you transfer the debt.
  • HSBC's zero per cent 'Christmas present'

Christmas might have come early for HSBC credit card customers, with the high-street bank offering zero per cent interest on balance transfers until January.

The new deal is available with an extended interest-free period of six months from November 21st.

Spencer May, head of consumer cards at HSBC, said: "At HSBC we continually look for ways in which we can help borrowers better manage their debt and we recognise that, for many, credit cards can be a convenient way of spreading the cost of Christmas shopping."

Mr May added that customers could save hundreds of pounds in interest with the new zero per cent offer, meaning that Christmas shoppers could get a better deal on their spending as well as reducing the cost of their borrowing.

Features of HSBC's credit card include an advanced fraud detection system with zero fraud liability when online transactions are made without the cardholder's authorisation.

The bank recently announced it will now offer commission-free currency for winter holidaymakers.
  • No mention of any fees but I would presume that HSBC will charge one - could be of benefit if you are a HSBC holder but cannot find a card to move cash to or don't want to use a credit score?
  • Have had been enjoying 9 months of £5000 credit on my Abbey card opened December last year, which I transferred off onto 2 new cards (both 0%) in the summer. Abbey offered me 2.9% until May 2007, but having read this thread I phoned up asking to cancel, and they offered 1.9% until May, and a £35 cap on the 2% charge - result!! So I now have £4750 getting interest until I need it to pay those 0% cards back around Jan  Thanks MSE!
  • Just been told I can have a futher 6 months 0% balance transfer by Alliance and Leicester.

When I said you will charge me a balance transfer fee the kind lady said No it's OK we can do the 0% without any fee if you let us know what you want to transfer in the next 2 months.:j

I will be back at the end of the month and get my maximum balance put into my Egg card and then from their straight into an high interest account to make another £90 off Alliance and Leicester.

So far this year approx £500 extra made from the Alliance and Leicester in Refer a freind payments, financial reveiw payment and profits from credit card 0% offers.:T
Plus both me and the OH have ISA at 5.45%, Direct saver 5.38%, current accounts at 5% and regular savers at 10%.

Their customer service may be crap but who cares at these rates.
  • I was offered 6 months at 0% with MBNA MotoGP mastercard and they waived the BT fee!

I've had the card for 18 months.
I like to save the money...
