I don't know really, it didn't smell like wee, but was really watery, so not like discharge which i'm used to being slightly thicker. If it was amniotic fluid is that a problem? Or can a bit of the fluid leak out now and again? God, how thick do i sound! I know the baby is contained in a sac of the fluid and so in my mind if it leaks then there must be a break in the sac and so if the fluid is getting out can bacteria get in? Sorry, just a bit freaked out as didn't know whether it was normal:)

Hi ladies, quick question, might be a bit gross?

Was in town earlier just walking to the health food shop and felt a bit damp (down there) got home and went to the loo to find a very damp pair of knickers and a damp patch on the crotch of my trousers, definately not wee wee, unsure now what to do. Could it be a little leak of fluid? It's not happened since i got home and i feel fine, bit of tummy and back ache but then i've had that before, i'm not due til 2nd September!

    Gross is good.. lol

It is most probably a mixture of sweat, wee and discharge... I am very very damp today too..

No but sometimes you can get weird discharge, nothing is normal...just remember that.

I've had every type of discharge one can imagine (no that you want to try).

If you're saying your pants were soaked and it COULD be amniotic fluid I would phone up and speak to a midwife. Sometimes you can have amniotic fluid, their concern would be an infection. Even if they can't see a problem they might do a scan to measure the amount of fluid around the baby.

But for me, I had plenty of fluid, no infections, just occasionally my discharge seemed to decide to have a runny day. You would be surprised how it manages to change. Personally, I'd give your midwife a call. A phonecall is worth it!

Edit: Since I had my two sweeps my discharge has disappeared :O

Probably just discharge but if it continues and you're worried ring your midwife.

Amniotic fluid doesn't have a set smell to it, it can be sweet, have no scent, or in my case smell like ammonia. It varies from person to person.

I got the eggwhite thing from my mum, to which I replied I had no idea what eggwhite smelt like.

Thanks guys, i think it's probably a mixture of sweat, wee and discharge. Don't feel so freaked out now though:)

If it happens again i might give the midwife a call.

Now I am in a discharge mood, anyone had any sweeps and found it has caused discharge overload? Mum thinks perhaps my cervix is in a really bad mood now!

  • Sequeena you are so right about the feotal med scanning machines. A friend's daughter had her 20 week scan at the same hospital as me, but just in regular ante natal and her pics aren't as clear as ours :D Our consultant even showed us our baby in 3D, but he looked like a little plastercine baby. Hope she shows us again when we go back at 28 weeks, even though we have a private 3D scan booked for 31 weeks :D

I have a lot of Down's members in my family. Yes, there are difficulties, and it is rough at times- it can be frustrating, and heartbreaking at times. The care and attention needed is usually lifelong, and depending on the severity, it can be hard explaining some things. BUT- it's also so very, very rewarding. I've worked as a volunteer in a Down's social club- and the joy and smiles- it was such a friendly, loving place, and so much unconditional love.
Obviously your first instinct is to hope against it, and I do sincerely hope for you both that the results are what you want- but although hard, it isn't a dark corner if the diagnosis is Downs. I know that's maybe very clumsy words, I hope it hasn't come out wrong..

Thanks Lirin, I think it is good to hear about other people's experiences, and you're right in that your first instinct is to hope against it. At the end of the day no one wants their child to have health issues or problems.

Do you know I hear about people's stories where they are not sure about whether their baby is going to be healthy or not and I think about people's comments about gender and I feel does it really matter??! All that matters is that baby is healthy and next time I get a negative comment I am going to tell them exactly that. Hugs to neas and WW xxx

I agree with you Kandboys, when you're faced with the fact that your child could be very ill when he is born, gender really isn't an important issue. People are odd and I can't understand why other people make such a big deal about it when they aren't the ones who are pg in the first place!

The process we have been going through is to try and tick off items from the list and if we get to the end of the list with all items ticked off we can relax... but even then the doctors warn the heart scan will only detect 70% of all problems, so baby could pass all and still need surgery after birth so will need checking over.

I think we have eliminated most of the above list baring CHD (Heart disorders), but as we say if we pass 24 week cardio scan we still got to wait till birth and keep an eye on him to check him over.

I would say the worry that you go through is not something that I would wish on anyone, and its truly gut wrenching to go through the process of being helpless while your baby is potentially ill.

As my parents said to me when we were contemplating the amnio, and I know it is a horrible thing to think so sorry if it offends anyone, but none of us are guaranteed a healthy baby. You can pass all the screening tests with flying colours and still have a baby who is ill at birth or later on. I work with someone who was your average child and met all his developmental milestones until he was 4, he then started regressing and was diagnosed as autistic. I work with a girl who was an average child until she got meningitis at 5 which caused severe brain damage. These are the realities of life, as sad as they are, and parents deal with them every day.

But as you say, I would not wish the worry on anyone. When we were originally told that we are high risk I really wished I hadn't had the bloods as we knew we wouldn't have an amnio, and I would have to go another 24 or so weeks worrying about everything. But now I'm glad I did as it has given us time to prepare mentally and emotionally for what we might face, and it means we are getting the correct ante natal care and the hospital are well aware of the care our baby might need when he is born.

I try not to google stuff too much as it just adds to the stress and worry for me.
