I would do the credit check first. If there is anything on that which is not correct, you can show it to the bank manager to show that this is not all your fault.

I would go to Barclays and then if need be you can follow it up with a letter along the lines of "Thank you for taking the time to see me today, however....." Generally a civilised meeting is far better than a shirty letter in my opinion.

Gather as much information as you can, whether your shortcomings or your grievences against the bank, or even your identity being used illegally and make sure that you have not missed anything. Then go to the bank and STAY CALM. Even if they are getting aggressive, STAY CALM. It will work in your favour at the end of the day and at least you will not let yourself down in any way.

  • I agree with hypno06. I checked my file and found things on it which did not relate to me at all. the people who used to live here had still been using my address and just having their post re directed. naughty people. If you go into bank all steam ahead you will only rub them up the wrong way. and anyway if you have a pile of bank charges on your account then your balance could well be reduced if you claim them all back.

  • Right honey. As some of the previous messages have said. take a deep breath and calm down. i have been in the same situation. i have opened an account with the abbey. was so easy to do. you can do direct debits standing orders, and they gve you a cash card to use in there machines. You will get your account number there and then so you can give that to your employers so you can get your wages paid into the account. Also, my bank manager there said she would revue my account every six months. And in time if i run the account right she will upgrade it to a full current accont. As for reclaiming bank charges go to the reclaim bank charges on this website. There is so much help and support from tons of people. you can get through this. And trust me your situation is nowhere near as some i have heard. Although all our situations are dreadful to us personally no matter how big or small the debt is. you have lots of ground to stand on. but you must read and take in the advice that the guys on here are giving you. Long winded message i know. But we are all here to help each other. Good luck

    Right.

Firstly you need to open a Basic Bank Account.

    Please read this thread here:-

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=319736

I have a few made a few recommendations on that thread regarding accounts. You may also want to consider CitiBank as they seem to be allowing people with adverse credit histories open standard current accounts with them, less credit facilities ofc.

Secondly, hop over to the reclaiming bank charges thread here:-

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.html?f=102

Post up your details about your charges and we will guide you through the process of reclaiming any.

Your first priority is to open an other account though so that you can get your salary paid into it and pay your bills etc.

I would then recommend sending a letter to your current bank, complete with income and expenditure details offering them a set repayment amount.

As other posters have said, best have a look at your credit history, see what Barclays have put on your file. Sorry to say, but your probably looking at receiving a default notice if you cannot clear your balance quickly.

If you have any other questions feel free to shout. We're all here to help, and most have been in your shoes before.
  • what is a default notice?(jailtime) ?

i will look at citi bank.
  • i felt the same way. I watched the forums for about a month before i actually put finger to keypad. But even so just reading everything for that month got me out of a black hole mentally. I have sent off my first letters to the banks and credit card companies to reclaim my bank charges, i have now taken responsibility for my finances and my future looks so much better. Go to the reclaim bank charges success stories forum and have a read. you will be inspired. Also the consumer action group website is fantastic. Everything you need to do, ie letters to the banks are already done for you. all you have to do is download them and send them off. Never before have so many people come together to help each other. and we are all total strangers. also look through the rest of martins web site. there are a million and one things on it. if you dont like telly just surf through all the forums and monthly challenges. will keep you busy for hours. and you wont need to worry about the telly. Give it a go.

lol, no, in reality you cannot go to jail for civil matters such as personal debt. Only if you have commited fraud of anything such like. Which you have not done.

A default notice is basically something that is sent to you and also send to the credit reference agencies. It basically states that you have defaulted on your agreement with the bank. i.e. in your case you are overlimit and have not repayed your balance in full within a set time frame as agreed in the terms and conditions of your account.

It will then show up on your credit file, and will remain their for 6 years. It will make getting credit very difficult for you. Which, isn't a bad thing really. You can still get mortgages and loans even with defaults and CCJ's. But that's another matter, i'm rambling!

Yes, have a look at CitiBank, you can apply online too. Otherwise have a look at the other thread that I posted and their are some very good Basic Accounts out there too.

    Great advice. Follow it.

If you post your income and outgoings here we will be able to tell you whether your bank will accept the amounts. There are many people on here who have vast experience and will say, "put more for food", "less for car" etc etc. How much per month do you think you can pay them?
