eleanor, it's only because I know he is going to propose to me in 2012, as he has told me. So him making comments like that to tease me and maybe 'put me off the scent' are annoying but not malicious. I hope!

    What a thread!

I have been with my BF for 18 months this valentines day... my close friends are all married (I'm 23 he's 28 - 29 in 2 weeks) so the pressure is always on... we moved in together about a month after we got together, we live and work together and are very very happy...

The BF is Dutch and over there they have given up with formal engagements ie: actually asking 'will you marry me?' as a school friend got engaged over xmas (haven't even been together a year) and the 'mum in law' was surprised the English still did engagements with rings and stuff... WE DEFINITELY DO RINGS AND STUFF!!! So anyway, as soon as I was alone with the BF I was like you are going to ask me to marry you and I am gonna have a ring aren't I?! the answer was yes to both *phew*

Valentines day, he's asked me what I want, I said a ring... It's not gonna happen but just throwing it out there! People say I should ask him but I really feel uncomfortable about it! maybe if I get really desperate!

Fingers crossed it happens for us lot soon!:rotfl:

edit: Just posted on FB the fact me and the BF have been together for 18 months on Tuesday, this was my reply from a friend:
    mayb engagement coming xx

All the rings are beautiful. The one is from Ernest Jones too.

Just sneaking on to say that OH said tonight that if we won competition like don't tell the bride he would marry me straight away! I think he is calling my bluff - maybe I should enter :rotfl:

Ally, I don't how you put up with it, you seem to get so many mixed messages from your OH! :rotfl: Dear me, you must have the patience of a saint.

rdchick, welcome to the thread...I'm not the youngest anymore! That's strange about Dutch people 'giving up' on proposals :(

Sorry for stealing your youngest title!

Yeah Dutch people don't do it any more they just decide they're gonna get married and then tell people the date.

Going to my first Dutch wedding in April, can't wait! It's here:

Think we might get married here too... would be soooo good!

They were together for 8 years before they got married and decided to get married at someone elses wedding so their motto is: a wedding comes from a wedding... hinting to my BF lol!

    I WANNA GET MARRIED!! xxx

The funny thing is, if I said to him you give me mixed messages all the time, he would deny it and say he never said he wasn't going to marry me so it has been the same answer all along:rotfl:

The mixed messages are because he is terrified, he rushed/ was talked into marriage with his ex (married within 2 years of meeting) and the whole thing was a complete disaster! The other thing that I have noticed is that his friends don't really get married either, they are all unmarried, a couple have kids but otherwise they are just living with their partners, this also includes his female friends. Maybe it is the norm down South? where I come from more North people meet, live together, marry & have kids - not always in that order, but they do get married at some point!

    Hey

Welcome :D Sounds like you have a lovely relationship. I do the same thing everytime OH asks what I want as a gift I always say a ring. He asked me the other day if I wanted anything from the shops - a pretty ring is what I replied with ;):rotfl:

One of my old school friends is married to a dutch girl, but I guess it is different that way round, I assume he did the asking.

Anyway, we are always here if you need a rant or a giggle x
