My question is, do you think it is wrong to put aside part of a legacy or other windfall for the engagement ring or should it always be saved from earnings?

Well my opinion is that she sounds incredibly spoilt and conceded and if I was him, that would make me wait even much longer before committing to a lifetime with her!!

does it matter where the money for the engagement ring comes from?

Nope! I (personally) think it doesn't matter. TBH I'd be happy if I got a proposal at all :rotfl:

Seriously though. My best friend didn't do the traditional engagement. It was more an announcement of 'we're getting married' as opposed to 'we got engaged' if that makes sense. No engagement ring at all. And her wedding ring was a plain, simple band made from old airplanes and cost £20 :D

I wouldn't be a traditional all-singing all-dancing type of girl either. It's about the marriage not the wedding. If OH spent even hundreds on a ring, never mind thousands, engagement and/or wedding ring, I'd be scared to wear it incase I lost it or it got damaged. And TBH I'd prefer the money was put towards a new kitchen!! :rotfl:

I realised today that unless I really 'push' my OH he isnt going ask. And I really, really dont want to do that!

I want it to be a suprise - unexpected and romatic. But years are passing by and nothing. Friends of ours keep getting engaged who havnt been together as long. Opportunities where I think 'is he going to ask' - have been and gone so many times.

We were chatting today as a friend of his just got engaged on holiday. Afterwards OH said 'I'd better ask you soon'. I kind of snapped a little, saying we've been together too long. Its been so long and I dont want to be sort of knowing when he's going to ask - or working it out. In the last year we have done two amaxing holidays where a proposal would have been amazing. We wont be going away anywhere special for the next year (maybe longer) so I have realised either I will be asked somewhere not-so-special or I will have to wait and wait. I dont want either of those options; and I'm not sure of the solution. Its even got me thinking whether he is the right man for me.
  • Thanks folks!

I plan to doit on holiday in a few weeks...just gotta find a way to get the ring in the bag without her seeing!

    I'm engaged!!!!!!!:j:j:j:j:j:j:j

I have lurked on this thread for AGES but hadn't posted. We've been together 2.5 years and living together for 2yrs. I started off quietly hoping then eventually I was dragging him to jewellers, pointing out venues etc. Every occasion I'd hope he'd do it then but it never happened. Well, we went to Amsterdam on Wednesday and on Wednesday afternoon he proposed!!!!! Although I'd been hoping before we went when it came to it I didn't have a clue and was so surprised. He designed the ring and it is perfect. Can't believe he did all that and I was oblivious to his plans. I just can't believe we're getting married!! He wants to spend the rest of his life with me :D SO happy!!!
