Abortion help :(

Regular poster hiding...

I've just found out im pregnant and Im not in a situation to even dream of keeping it :( I have no idea how far gone I am as I was on the pill (yeh great, thanks for not working!) but the clearblue said +3 weeks so thats anything really!

I havent spoken to the dad in 4 weeks due to rather a nasty breakup but I know he doesn't want kids (I will obviously talk to him about it) so know he will agree that an abortion is the right answer for us. Me? Well Im not in any situation to bring up a child. Im currently out of work and have been for a few months (I relocated to be with boyfriend and have now come back to 'home') and am currently sofa surfing with very nice friends!

I have nothing against people who don't work and have kids but I really do not want to bring a child up in these situations. I don't unfortunately have family around me, so it's just my friends (who are great, but not like that. Lol).

I've looked online and it appears the only abortion clinic in my area is at a private hospital? Will they still do it on the NHS? Im a bit confused!!

Just needed to tell someone as my friends won't understand :(

Please don't turn this into a pro v anti abortion argument as I will just ignore it.

I know what I have to do, Im just not sure how to do it.

Thank you for listening.

You will either have to go to your GP for a referal to another Dr, who both have to agree on it.

Or go to your local family health clinic, they can refer you too.

If the only local place is private, generally the NHS will pay for it.

    Good luck.

Not something I have any experience in, but I just so happen to be reading the forum when you posted and thought you might appreciate a quick reply.

Dont panic, you sound sensible and well grounded. Its a big decision so make sure you dont rush into anything, but ultimately you just need support from people, not opinions.

Anyway, get yourself down to your GP, they will help a lot and arrange everything for you on the NHS (even if they pay for you to go to the private hospital).

Good luck, and I am sorry you have to do this without family around.
  • Thank you. Im concerned to go to a GP as I went last week feeling sick and was 'late' and she told me that I wasn't pregnant as I was on the pill and to not be so silly? I asked for a test (too skint to buy one at that point) and she refused.

I actually left feeling convinced I wasn't!! Unfortunately the surgery doesn't have many doctors but maybe I could ask to see another one?

I've looked on the NHS website and thats the only one thats listed but to be honest Im surprised as I live in quite a populated area!!

Yep, go to your GP or FP clinic if you prefer, they will refer you to either the private clinic, or some hospitals do it. You won't need to pay or anything.

The sooner you go the better.

Go to your GP (or register as a visitor at a friends if you haven't sorted that since moving). Tell them your predictament (perhaps print out your post and take it with you for them to read if you think you'll get in a muddle?) and ask for non-judgemental counselling (i.e. at a place that doesn't have a pro / anti abortion stance, just someone to talk to) and ask what happens in your area if you do decide not to go ahead with the pregnancy.

Did you leave your GP surgery when you moved away? You need to make sure you are back at your local one and see her/him ASAP to discuss through your options.

Hard decision, but sounds like you have made it, and I wish you the best OP xxx
  • Thank you so much for the replies. I have re registered at my old one so Im back with them.

Where would I find my local family planning clinic? Im only 24 so know I can go to connexions but having been there once am well put off on returning!

Give these people a ring http://www.bpas.org/bpaswoman they can help. My friend phoned these, and they organised everything for her, she never saw her GP.

If you think your doctor will not be too helpful then go to your local FP clinic.
