top tip for anyone shopping for booze with kids - go to Majestic - not only do they happily serve you - they give the kids free lollipops!

Our local corner shop was done for selling to under 18s, when they got their licience back they went over the top, a friend of mine who is 52 went in to buy a bottle of wine and was refused because he didn't have ID with him. His 90 year old mother, who's been waiting in the car, then went in to buy the wine and was also refused because she had no ID. There is no way either of them look under age.

i am nearly 30 and have never been asked for ID in my life.

i used to work for a supermarket and was serving a couple with a lad who to me looked 15-18 with wine and beer in their normal food shop and thought that maybe they were buying some beer for him too so asked for ID and he had none so i refused to sell it too them, i didnt ID the couple as i was 100% sure they was over 40, they complained to my manager who then tried to make me sell it too them i again refused so he made me serve them for the food shop then got someone else to serve them who did. my opinion is if im at risk of loosing my job then i should be able to decide for myself, i would have served them if their son looked 12 or under and i agree it is getting silly if you cant buy alcohol with a child with you.

  • Last friday i was with 2 friends in Aldi, we all got ID'd. All ID produced and we still were refused it because one of the ID's was a provisional driving licence! The person serving us had put the alcohol through and asked us for money when another worker came over and butted in that they dont accept provisionals. Silly to say the other two forms of ID were a valid passport and a full driving licence!

**Facepalm** If they accept a full licence what on earth is their beef with a provisional?!
I did once get offered an expired passport as ID. The lad had just turned 18 as the passport proved, unfortunately it had been issued when he was about two so wasn't exactly an accurate enough photo to identify him.

Oh, and another time I saw a girl's passport, noticed her unusual name (it was double- barrelled and foreign) and asked her how it was pronounced. She told me the second bit, and appeared to forget that there was another bit to her own name :rotfl:. I had been about to serve her but that completely threw me.

I really hate the term "jobsworth" - these people are just doing their jobs, which they are paid to do, and if they don't carry out procedures set by the companies, could face being fired. I've previously worked in job where I have had to ID people, and that is what I was doing- my job. Not because I wanted to, but because it was part of what I was being paid to do.
TBH you see parents buying booze for their very obviously under age teenagers quite often (my friends Mum started buying her alcohol at 14- at the time we all thought it was very cool, now I question the parenting), so I don't see a problem with it really. If you need booze that badly, don't take kids with you.

There is a very simple solution here.. If you are going to buy alcohol/cigarettes etc then take ID! Then you have the evidence to show you are of age and the cashier doesnt get the backwash and being called all the names under the sun because you stupidly didnt bring your ID.

My fiance and I had a similar experience in Tesco when he had ID and I didn't (we're both mid 20's). It's an absolute joke and I refuse to believe that there is a law out there that states that adults can't buy alcohol when they are with under 18's. At the time, we had a full weeks worth of shopping and one bottle of mid-priced wine. Surely there has to be an element of discretion with this rule?

I could understand if it was a 19 year old with a bunch of 16 year olds buying bottles of white lightening, but come on! As another poster said, can families not go shopping together now? Why should someone have to go in on their own to buy alcohol? And how would that stop them from giving the booze they buy to underage kids? The kids could just wait outside the shop!

My fiance did ask what would happen if we bought the shopping together and then he came back in on his own to buy the wine. The manager said he would refuse to serve him... it was quite comical really. It's just crazy and I think some staff members in supermarkets have got the gist of the law wrong. I don't think it was ever meant to mean that adults can't purchase alcohol when they are with under 18's.

this is ridiculous, surely that means then that you can never serve alcohol to anyone as they may have children at home

I work for one off the large supermarkets and we have to use our own common sense

e.g. If parents come in with their children we serve them (may ID parents if they look under 25)

Anyone looking under 25 we do ID and most of us err on the side of caution because our jobs and a criminal record are on the line.

Difficult bit is when a crowd of young people come in buying booze. Irrelevant of who is paying we must ID all of them and if one can't produce ID we refuse the sale.

We also have to watch for a group of kids coming in with one who is over age and before they get to the till they split up and the younger ones come through separately with maybe a bar of chocolate pretending they aren't together.

Lot more to this Think 25 than you realise for the shop assistants and all for just over £6 an hour!!
