I have just bought my friends iPhone 4 which is locked to vodafone, as I am not with Vodafone they will not unlock it. I have been told that if the man at the local phone shop unlocks it, It may have problems when I sync or update it? I have looked online and there seems to be loads of places, such as this one: http://www.iphoneunlockuk.com/iphone-3g-unlock.php

It is expensive at £40 bit seems the real deal. Any advice would be great as I am unsure what to do

Bite the bullet and use a PAYG SIM from the network the iPhone is locked to. If you don't any unlock will simply be reapplied the moment you upgrade the OS, requiring you to pay again for re-unlocking. You could go the whole hog anf Jailbreak the handset but this can cause additional problems for the not tech user, and often depresses its value.

I'm assuming Vodafone will work the same as other networks, if you have a PAYG accou8nt for 3 months, they will then entertain a request to unlock. This will cost around £20 or so, BUT is permanent, and any OS change will not relock it as the removal of the lock is done within iTunes.

Put the details in here for the original owner and it will be unlocked within 7 days, usually 48 hrs

Or you could just download the green poison jailbreaking tool from their website and do it yourself in 5 minutes....

    That is what I did.

Simple eay to follow instructions on your pc :) Good luck

Why would you want to bother with that when you can get it done officially, jailbreaking is only good upto the next update

  • I also had quite a good experience getting my iPhone 3G unlocked with O2. Although I was very keen to leave them asap, their 3G is abysmal!

Most jailbreaks follow over for the minor updates. So all updates upto the last one, iOS5, have actually worked and there is already a JB for iOS5.

It allows you to change things, the little things, that apple wouldn't let you like startup logos, text alerts etc.

That is why I do it :)

My daughter has just given me an iPhone, well her old one really.

She decided she couldn't wait any longer and has bought the latest model, dumping last years model with me. She used it on the O2 network.

I want to use my Tmobile sim in the phone, but understand it needs to be unlocked. If I can browse the internet too, that would be great, but that's not essential.

I took it to a local shop and was shocked to find it would cost £50 to have it unlocked

is this the going rate, or is there an easier way to do it ... by easier, I really mean cheaper.

    thanks in advance !
  • You can jailbreak it then use ultrasn0w inside of cydia to do it, this will void any warranty the phone has and it must be a baseband unlockable by ultrasn0w but it's easy to do yourself and it's free, i assume that's probably what they would do at one of those places anyway but im not sure

Thankyou for your reply, but you are talking a different language to the one I know. No doubt the 'techies' can follow it, but not me.

    Maybe my daughter will know

    Regards !
