washable sanitary protection

I upcycled some old flannel pyjamas into reusable pads. They are so comfy and don't irritate me at all. I developed an allergy to the disposable ones so I was glad when I stumbled across a thread online. They were easy to make (I made my own template using a disposable pad as a guide). Mine are stuffable, I use old worn out facecloths folded up as a liner. They're also great for those who have erratic periods (like me) - I can wear a thin pad in anticipation of my period and it won't give me thrush (unlike those nasty disposables!).0

Have just found this thread! Been using mooncup for over a year and getting on fine with it, despite teething trouble of how to get it out! but now have sussed the squeeze to release the vacuum action!
I don't know if this is relevant for any of you re the heavy and painful periods, but i'm currently waiting to have endometrial ablation to make periods lighter/stop altogether having tried coil/pill/injection in the past. May be of use to someone on here??
Am off to investigate the washable pads as i didn't know they existed!Smoke free since 30/01/13 :j0 -
Hi ladies,
sorry to drag up an old thread, is there a newer one?
Anyway i am about to order and have a few questions.
Do you change these every 4 hours like disposable ones? if so how many should i order? was thinking of plush pants & i do a hot wash 1/2 times a week which i would include the pads in
anyone recomend any other places to buy?
they are expensive but i hope they last?!0 -
Hi, sorry I can't answer all of your questions. But have some views that may help you.
I had my doubts about them but all the things that they say on here are true. Periods seem shorter and less heavy. I have an old nappy bin that I keep next to the upstairs toilet.
I have been using washables for about two years now. I can't remember the name of mine but they are a creamy colour. I would suggest changing them as you would disposables, although I tend to use three a day.
I would recommend buying coloured ones as mine are a bit stained now.
Hope this helps.Without overpayments: 15 years, 1 monthsBecause of overpayments: 10 years, 10 months left until paid off0 -
I stumbled across this thread whilst reading the "It is tough now...." thread and you have all inspired me to take the plunge and order some washable "fairy hammocks" from weenotions :j I followed the links posted and the things I have found out have certainly given me something to think about. My using up to 10,000 STs in a lifetime and them all ending up in landfill is a sobering thought
I have also noticed that some brands of disposable towels can make me uncomfortable (like a burning sensation) and had wondered if I was allergic to some of the chemicals used, but wasn't aware that there was another alternative to STs.
I have just ordered two for now to see how I get on with them but if I like them I might have a go at making my own (I'm pretty handy with the sewing machine)
Thank you all once again xxMammy to 2 boys aged 5 and 20 -
I think i commented on this thread quite a while ago now but thought seeing as others have bought it up to date i would give a quick review.
I cant remember what site I ordered from but i will check the packet/envelope and update(yes I still have it im a horder!) It was a lot cheaper then i thought it would be but i ordered a pack of 5-6 for about £3-4 if i remember rightly.
Anyway I use them most of the time and have found my periods dont last as long when i use them.
I do alternate between washables and disposables for different situations but on the whole if I could wear washables all the time I would!
Mine have obviously been washed a lot but are still in great condition just gone a slightly darker cream as they've been washed so much.
Thanks to all the fab ladies on this thread who have given great advice and turned me onto washables
Cheers

I got a small plastic tool box from Asda and its perfect for soaking them in and has a lid which you can clip shut if you need to. Got it a while back so not sure if they still do them but I think you'd be able to get them other places too.0
