Hi ladies,
I'd been thinking about making the switch to washable pads for years, but was always held back by the upfront cost (in case I didn't like them) and the effort involved in washing them. Finally taken the plunge and have bought some bamboo velour pads from http://www.honouryourflow.co.uk/index.asp I LOVE THEM! Will be buying some more. I initially bought three to mix with my remaining pack of disposables for the rest of this month as a trial before buying more, but I don't want to wait until next month or go back to scratchy, chemically and plasticy disposables. There is nothing 'icky' about them. They are less messy than disposables as they are more absorbant. There is also very little odour. A quick soak in cold water before putting in the normal wash and it is simple! (On a note that may be a step too far for some people, if you just use cold water to soak in and not include salt/essential oils, you can pour the used water onto your garden - great for veggies! Not much different to the supermarket vegetables being grown with fish blood and offal on the fields).
I blogged about it today (link in my profile if you are interested) that making this switch has not only enabled me to help the environment more, but has also helped me not be embarrassed by my womanhood. We have been conditioned to think of our menstruation as an embarrassing illness that needs to be hidden and taken care of with surgical, disposable products. It is simply not true.
If you are thinking of taking the plunge with either washable pads, mooncups or sea sponge tampons - go for it! You will NOT regret it.~ Lexie ~The Minimoilist.Saving money and the planet at the same time.0 -
well, i've just taken the plunge & ordered some moon sponges from https://www.moontimes.co.uk..I could never get on with tampons so am wary of spending money on something like the mooncup but if worse comes to worse these sponges can be used as other things! I expect to use them with some normal sanitary towels as well,as my periods are pretty heavy.
I have been using cloth pads (partially) for the last few years but they do need replacing. I use ordinary absorbent cloths folded over as panty liners & also sometimes on top of the normal sanitary towel,as they are easy to wash & fairly quick to dry.
thanks for all the links folks, there were loads of sites I hadn't seen! What choice!! It is hard when you're on a low income though, just for the initial outlay.

Just thought I would bring this thread back up
.
I'm now using reusable pads that I made myself and don't want to go back to bought kind - I will buy some of the organic and biodegradable ones for when I honestly can not use my reusable but they will be for then only. I secure my pads by using safety pins.
I love how they can just go in to a normal wash as they are not very big at all - my night ones are 30cm long, 18.5cm wide with the wing and not even 5mm thick at the thickest part. I just soak them in cold water, scrub them a bit against itself, ring them out and then put them somewhere to dry (I use the side of the bath as it is the easiest for me :rotfl:) before putting them in the wash to get washed properly.
I'm never going to worry abut if I have pads before I start a period  which also means my partner doesn't get told to go out and get them ASAP as I have none and am starting, lol.
I am going to save at least £18 a year after total cost of making them if they last 5 years.
They feel so soft and although I was worrid about them leaking, as I only make them out of cotton and towel, they do not leak at all!
They are good for the environment .
It really isn't difficult to make them and they are cheap to make. I did use material that I got given and old towels but you can easily buy suitable material for £4-5/meter to make a few (if you have a local material shop you can often find off cuts big enough to do the pad shapes for 50p-£1). Even if you can't make them they are still cheaper to buy than buying non-reusables are over the years they will be good for!
My fiance is really supportive and doesn't find the reusable pads in any way 'ewww' worthy which is very good. Thankfully he has never been one to go red because of pads - I was always able to ask him to buy them for me and he would happily do it. He thinks they are amazing as well :T. He isn't keen on the idea of me getting the mooncup though but I won't be getting one until I after children if we can have them (if we are and do we are set on using reusable nappies) or if we get told we shouldn't as I don't want to buy one and not be able to use it to at least break even with the cost of it
. I never did get on with tampons but I think when the time comes to get a mooncup I will be okay as it is different to tampons.
