Wow, this reminds me of conversations I used to have with my grandmother. They had to use washable protection, there wasn't anything else. Of course, these took the form of 'rags' which were old clothes cut up, hemmed and folded to the right shape and size. She was always intrigued by tampons (especially the non-applicator ones in bright packaging) and told me how lucky I was to be able to use them! I think she would be horrified that I am thinking of getting a couple of washable pads to go with my mooncup, though I expect she would approve of the mooncup! Amazing how we seem to have come full circle, isn't it? :)
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

do they need a plastic backing to prevent leaks?

Hi, I have never had a problem with leaks and have used several different makes. Some do have plastic liners if you are worried but I prefer without. As many makes come apart with inserts you can check whether you need to change, iyswim.
  • I just bumped into this thread while looking for patterns for sanitary products for a project for young girls in Africa. To those f you who think using reusable sanitary products is disgusting ...then imagine using rags, newspapers or leaves....This is what many girls are using in Africa. Please ladies if theres anyone making these for fun and is willing to donate some please check positiveyouth . org .uk projects. we are also in need of hand oparated or treadle sewing machines.

Hi there first tme poster long time lurker.

Having used disposable pads for a very long time and hated it completely (the glue they use is terrible i almost always rip the damn thing getting it off uck! And the fact ur sitting in dried blood made me shudder and change every hr which cost me a fortune) I tried some washables. I bought a nappy bucket from mothercare (so tiny!) and used salt and cold water in it underneath the loo. I really am impressed!! So i decided to take it a bit further and after much hesitation about it finally got around to buying a menstrual cup. I have to admit im a bit squeemsh about it but if u dont try things how would u know if u liked or not? This users videos are extremely good about easing my fears youtube.com/user/MenstrualCupInfo so much so i went and bought one. There is also a range of soaps, washes and wipes in the uk called Femifresh in all supermarkets. I hope someone finds this useful. :smileyhea
  • I'm a fella and i'm convinced. Just stumbled on this by accident, never heard of things like this before (unsurprisingly)... Very Good thread though.

I've been given an education. :T
If it wasn't for the mistakes I made in the past (and learned from), I wouldn't be who and where I am today. It doesn't matter if you've cocked up, what matters is that you put it right and apologise. x
  • resurrecting this thread for some advice....... are there any site which offer a pack of say 3 or so pads to have as a starter pack? I'd like to change to reuseables but I'd like a pack to start me off rather than buy a few individually.

    TIA :)

i've discovered the Mooncup - had it for about 3 years now and wouldn't change it for anything :)

Of course, each to their own and this is just my experience :)
