Thank you ladies for all the helpful posts....I have often been a forum "lurker" but this thread has finally motivated me to register so I can post!

I've never used anything but disposable pads and tampons before but was talking with my sister who is a convert to washable pads. I'm fed up with disposables so am ready to give this a go.

In looking through all the links, some of which no longer work, I thought perhaps the following might be helpful = an up-to-date listing of the sites with an idea of price range for people like me, looking at this idea from scratch.
  • Arg! Apparently as a new user I cannot post any links. Will try back in a day or two and see if it will let me then. Sorry! :(

I can't imagine using a rag and washing it unless i had to. Give me good old tampons any day.!! I'm not squeamish, but why make life more difficult than it needs to be, everyone will be washing their clother on a rock by the river next...and yes, i did use disposable nappies!!

It's very little work and they are so much more comfortable than disposables. I had to use disposable sanitary pads recently for the first time since my daughter was born 3 1/2 years ago and I'd forgotten what they were like - "cottonlike feel" my foot.

Incidentally, handwashing your clothes is less work than you probably think but a lot more work than washable sanitary protection.

I've just found this thread when looking at the new posts section.
I used washables that I made myself for about three years but no longer need them now. I have hung on to them in case I need them for another use. I wish I had realised many years ago about making them because I hated disposables for all the reasons listed in the posts on here.
I used a plastic bucket that had paint in it once. It has a very tight fitting lid and is not very big.
I used to put them in dry till there were a few then soak in cold water for a while and just throw them in the washer on a rinse cycle. After that they were washed with anything else that had to be washed. I did not need to touch them because the bucket fitted inside the washer door so I could tip them straight in.
I made mine from cotton t shirts with layers of cut up bits of towel or tea towel for the inner core. I made some standard disposable size and some longer ones for heavier days along with a few thicker ones for night time. I did not have any with poppers they were just like standard towels that are sticky back but I never found that they slipped or anything, especially the longer ones but that may also have been the type of underwear I wear.
  • A few months ago I got several Peeweez cloth menstrual pads and because I know they're saving me money I thought it appropriate to review and recommed them on this very useful site.
    :j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j
Here's a brief breakdown of the many ways I'm saving money:
    • I now only use one tampon per cycle.
    • If my cycle is due I can wear one just in case and I've not lost a single penny.
    • If I decide on a change of pants I can reuse the same pad if desired.
    • I've experienced no leaks whatsoever and am therefore saving money on new pants.
    • Peeweez cover the cost of postage and packing to anywhere in the UK.
    • At £4 each they undercut all of the competition I've found.
    • After use they can be safely folded into neat little envelopes thereby saving money on additional bags.
    • I pre-soak them in cold water, no extra chemicals are required.
    • I don't need to put them in their own separate machine wash.
    • They take up little space in the machine.
    • They clean perfectly well at 40 degrees.
Here are some other attractive facts about Peeweez:
    • They don't irritate me.
    • They're made from incredibly soft materials.
    • The flannelette is recycled but of very high quality.
    • There's no risk of toxic shock syndrome.
    • They are slim-fitting and discrete.
    • They don't make a rustling noise like some commercial throw-away pads can.
    • I'm sure they would be fine for "ladies-who-leak" due to bladder weakness.
    • I'm not supporting multinational corporations.
  • Until a year ago, I used a Mooncup and loved it! My cramps almost disappeared and I found that by carrying a small bottle of water around with me, "changing" the cup and washing it out was easily accomplished in public loos (and the loo at work).
I no longer use it, but that is simply because I am going through the menopause and haven't had a period for a year. In all, I used it for two years and really wish I'd come across it sooner!

  • Well I have tried out my recently ordered Angelpadz and I am a total convert to washable protection. I did get myself used to it by wearing one the last day or so of my period so light flow, but then on my next used them all throughout.

I also used my normal disposable pad (bodyform) just to see if it was my memory at fault but no, the disposable pad feels like a piece of cardboard after wearing the cloth ones.

Most of the time I forgot I was on my period, unbelievably....normally it's something I'm conscious of every minute for the entire 5 days. I must admit it was a little weird when I recalled that I had only cloth on and no disposable pad, but sooo much more comfortable.

I will be giving away the rest of my unused disposables to a friend--wasteful I know but I can't bear to use them again-- and ordering a few more washable ones--I started with two and just washed and swapped them. I pre-rinsed them and they washed up fine.

Not sure if this has been talked about but I use the jam sponge and have great results with it. I also use Honor your flow washable pads and have a froggy Anglepadz one which I love.

I tried the mooncup but really could not get on with it so was worried about the jam sponge but it is so much easier and softer to use.

I use Peeweez pads cloth pads. They work really well and fold up into neat little self contained envelopes so no need to carry extra bags. No leaks even at night and cheap. Have a look at at there on-line shop.
