I am a BT Yahoo Dial Up customer, and wonder what is the best way of avoiding the standard 3-2-1-p per minute charge involved in this service. I have registered for both 18866 and 1899 ( many thanks, all for excellent advice about these services), and have an unanswered e-mail to 18866 regarding this question.
Any ideas !!??!!

If you're after per minute dial up, I think something like 1p a minute internet access is probably around the cheapest unless your usage is high enough to justify one of the cheaper unmetered services.
I know 24/7 1p a minute is available from https://www.alphatelecom.co.uk - there may be others too.0 -
It really depends on how long you spend online to what the cheapest dial-up is. If you spend a long time online then it might be worthwhile signing up to a dial-up package giving a certain number of hours. I am signed up to one of these packages and it works out at a lot less than 1p a minute.
For example Force9's cheapest package is £4.99 a month giving 5hrs a week access any time of the day. Pay an extra £5 and you get an extra 15 hours a week plus unlimited use during the night (1am-7am).0 -
You can try using 1899's 3p/call offer and then calling BT Yahoo on it.
Note - you would not be calling the 0844/5 number you normally call but their "international" connection numbers
From their web site these are:
BT Yahoo! from abroad
International (PSTN): 0121 478 9200
International (ISDN): 0121 478 9300

Smurf, do you use that Force9 ISP ? if so, what experinces have you, ie disconnection etc. It certainly looks good, I favour the £9.99 plan, a saving on my current wanadoo plan. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Is this right? 1899's FAQ's says: "Can I access the internet via 1899? No, unfortunately this is not possible. Internet providers offer dial up services using special access numbers which cannot be dialled using 1899." Sister-company 18866 states: "Can I use 18866 for calls to 08 or 09 numbers? 0845 and 0870 numbers will work, but most other numbers starting with 08 or 09 cannot be dialled using 18866."
I dial my ISP's 0845 number as a "Special Friend" on my BT line, getting 20% off, but 1899 to a standard landline number would probably work out better for me. Anyone tried it?0 -

Have you looked at Firefly ISP - can be less than half a pence a minute paid for in advance.

1899 and 18866 both work to the BTinternet 0121 numbers - 1899 must be the cheapest way of connecting to the internet ever!To infinity and beyond!0
-
Also - using onetel - you can connect to the BT internet 0121 number (or other similar 01 numbers for other isps) free all weekend !To infinity and beyond!0

So I presume we would also be able to access BT Yahoo payg etc for free for 70 mins at a time through Talk Talk even and w/e for 12 months???0
