There's a SMA site near me in Kinross - the same that scotsman4th said indemnity is ridiculous.
I'm not travelling to Newcastle (140mi) to buy a car - train fares, risk of spending money to come home with nothing, etc.0 -

But this is what people do to get the bargains.
Though if you are happy with the price of the 405 then go for it, they are a comfy old bus, and being petrol it is unlikely to have been minicabbed.
Would be a reasonable choice for LPG conversion with a self fit Tinley Tech system, fit it yourself then take it to them for inspection and certification.
The 405 has nicer handling than a 406, the 406 is a bit heavier and lost the handling edge of the older car. Was better built though.
I am hopefully going to Chelmsford tomorrow, I will report back on shed prices more accurately if I manage to go.
But remember that by spending £50 on trains and taxis can sometimes save you £300, that is why many people do it, it is much easier with a towtruck or car trailer obviously.0 -
I assume the 405 doesn't have a similarly stupid offset pedal box like the 106?0

I think that 405 looks a tidy car, 1 owner full history, no chance it's been a private hire or it wouldn't have lasted this long. It actually looks quite cherished. I would hope to get it for about £450 cash. The dealer can tax the car if he has a traders policy but the V5 will come back in his name and will have to be sent off again for your name putting on the V5.
Traders have accounts at Auctions hence they pay a reduced indemnity and they don't have to pay £25 for the V5, so they don't have as much outlay as a private buyer.
Check out the 405, it looks a worthy shed.

Went to Chelmsford today, missed the cheapues but the fees have doubled since Aston Barclay have taken them over, fees are now on par with BCA.
Did see some motability cars go through.
Renault Scenic 1.6 petrol Auto with 12k, sold and gone at £4150 plus fees, on an 08 plate, a similar one in a nice Burgandy with a £300 dent in the rear quarter went for £3750 plus fees, again on an 08 plate with low miles.
Fees would been £255 and £266 inc VAT, just under half that for trade.
But i don't think just over £4400 for a three yr old low mileage MPV is bad, even if buying an autimatic Renault is a little risky, even if you had to spend £1000 on a gearbox in a couple of years time it is still cheap wheels.
A did see one intersting cheapy though, 52 plate 406 estate, fsh, leather and not high miles, not tatty either. Nice met bkue colour, went for £375 plus fees.
The onky issue was the 3.0V6 engine under the bonnet, but put on LPG and you have a very quick, smooth estate car for shed money, for that money i would drive it without LPG for 6 months then sell it on. Would bankrupt me after a while as i do over 25k a year.
The 3.0 V6 was a lovely engine, not sure how reliable as they were rare.
Better than an old 405, i should coco.£70 trade fees or £101 private buyer fees. Last year the fees would have been a lot less.
Poxy, greedy auctions.
But that kind of car is my kind of "shed driving", why not do it with a bit of luxury.
You could break it for three times that moneyi reckon.0 -
At low twenties mpg I couldn't afford to start it, let alone break it.0

How much is a LPG conversion these days? Would the cost of that still keep it in shed money?0
