I'm in my early 40s, and have only been converted to OS ways since the start of the year. I'm trying to cook more healthily for my diabetic hubby, as well as save money.
Having chatted with a few people at work, some still buy lots of convenience products, but quite a few are looking at doing things more frugally. From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0 -
My small son asked for a dress for one of his little bunny toys last night. I crocheted one in less than an hour. I was taught by my nan as she lived with us. Just as well as my mum had no cooking or craft skills to pass on....long and complicated story due to my gran on that side being fostered out when she was small.0

I'm 40 this year, I don't have kids or an OH but my friends and family make fun of my OS ways.
I shop at Ald* for me and Morriso*s for the cat as he wont eat their food! My weekly shop comes to £10 at the most.
My mum refers to a small cupboard in my spare room as 'the local shop' ... it has a stockpile of loo rolls, washing powder, fabric cond and pet food on top...inside is tinned/packet goods like tomatoes, various beans/pulses, tea bags, pasta etc.....took a few months to build up but just bought 1 or 2 extra items a week. This way I have food in if money is short or I'm not up to going out.
I cook from scratch all the time and never ever throw food away, if it cant be frozen I find a way to use it up...means I have some interesting meals! Friends think its weird that I don't get takeaways or buy ready meals
I wont replace any item in the house unless its broken...I refuse to pay the price for flashy gadgets when the one I have works perfectly well...my iron lasted 19 years...my hoover was 2nd hand and lasted about 12 years.
I cross-stitch, dont do many as gifts but my mums getting one as a xmas present this year. I can knit and have made my own jumpers in the past but I dont do it much now0 -
There have been a couple of threads in the past about this, and I think there were a few OSers who were still in their teens who made everything from scratch and enjoy crafts. I think some of their friends and family thought they were a bit odd too. The younger the better really I think. You're definitely not strange OP :-)0

Well done :T and welcome to all our 'new and younger members'.
Believe me, there's nothing remotely strange about you all - you've just got 'common sense' written right through you, like a stick of Blackpool Rock :rotfl:.
Keep up the good work and ignore any mickey takers; will they still be doing that when THEY'VE run out of money while you're managing to maintain your lifestyle/holidays.
I guess the answer to that one is a big, fat 'NO!'0 -
Hi all :j
Well my birth certificate claims I'm 32 but I still feel like I'm 18 :rotfl:
I haven't always been an OS'er bit since buying and renovating our house I've found that for me it's a lot easier and more fun to get by 'the old way'. We cook from scratch, bake our own cakes and biscuits, keep chickens, make jams/ chutneys and make a lot of homemade presents. To some people I might appear a bit crazy and Im often met with the question 'why don't you just buy it? ' but I would rather make/give something from the heart rather than buy something off the shelf of the supermarkets. Keep up the OS ways everyone and be proud of it
