I'm 35 but have been OS forever pretty much. When I went to Uni at 18 I very quickly realised that living on Pot Noodle was not really me. Worryingly most of the people I knew had nothing else in their cupboards! Some still don't... no wonder they stayed thin! And malnourished probably. People did think it was a bit odd cooking my own food all the time but seemed to appreciate it when they were eating it.
Good for you for starting now! Let's face it - it gives you control of your life (and makes it much easier when confronted in a kitchen with a jar of pesto some almost sell by date pasta, and a tin of salmon, cheese ends and some prawn cocktail crisps) which was all a friend had in to cook a lovely meal for her boyfriend. I gave her a hand and she told me later that he'd asked her who had cooked it, refused to believe that it was her and suggested that I had. You can go off people...:D
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...
I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!0 -

I'm 26 and have had the OS bug for a while now. I know a few people who are the same, but for different reasons i.e. trying to resist the commercial world we live in/conscious about their impact on the environment. For me, a few crazy years paid for on plastic has left me with a serious lesson learnt! However, 2008 is the year I intend to make a clean break and fully embracing the OS way is the best way I can see through it all. I've always been able to bake a cake/grow a plant/make a dress but now I see it as a way of life, not just a pleasant diversion. Before I buy anything, I think about whether I could make it. I'm halfway through a laptop bag now. Other people are starting to notice the difference too. My friends always want to come and stay as I always bake a cake and cook something from scratch. My mother (who can remember the post-war rationing) laughs about it and thinks I was either born in the wrong generation or am my great grandmother (16 kids and not too coins to rub together) reincarnated.
Its funny how it has really changed my perspective. I used to think that happiness lay in being comfortably off enough not to have to worry about money; now my idea of happiness is not needing money and I long for my own little small holding with a goat and some geese and some bees and all the different veg I could grow and fruit bushes.... [drifts off into usual day dream]...Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.0 -

I'm 22 as well - you are not alone!

I am a single full time student, with a mortgage and a baby on the way. I love the support and ideas I get from the OS board. I still struggle, but it helps me to stay more positive and less isolated.
Long Live The OS!0 -

I'm 29 and have started looking at this site over the last few months. I'm completely hooked! Money has always burned a hole in my pocket and its a standing joke in our house when I say "ooh I've got an idea!" my husbands reply is always "how much is it going to cost?" But I can honestly say since coming on here I have changed. I am now baking all my own bread, using shop own brands and cooking from scratch. My husband told me i had gone too far when I bought a pack of 12 toilet rolls from sainsburys for only £1.12 but even he was suprised at how good they were.0

I'm a young 'un too

I joined the site when i was 19 and just about to move into my first home with DD (then just turned 3). I'm 23 now and live with my OH, DD (6 going on 16) and have a baby boy due in July. I'm far from a perfect O/S but i try and do what works for me and i'm hoping to do more and more as time goes on.
I love that there are so many like-minded people out there and we can all come on here and share tips, advice, experiences etc. I've said it before but this is the one place, both online and in real life where i feel that i fit in. I'm not a confident person and find it hard to make friends, even harder when i'm not your 'average' 23 yr old with my O/S ways etc which tbh the majority of people dont understand
