Some people like to brag about how expensive an item was, that they bought. I like to brag how cheaply I can buy something, I don't mean cheap as in tatty, but maybe something of quality, but second hand.

Im 24, married with 3 children and feel like an accomplished home maker!
I love MSE with a passion, and my OS ways.
It does make me feel old against others i know my age, but i couldnt imagine us any other way. We live in a cottage in the countryside and spend our time on gardening, making bread and Shabby Chic'ing!!!

Oh no, it shouldn't make you feel old, you are just living by your own high standards and that's good. You should feel young and free from all the pressure to spend just for the sake of it. I say well done. :A

I'm 20 + 16 and wish I too had found this site years ago.I've always enjoyed baking, knitting, making things ect.At college I was the one who liked to stay in lol.My friends always seemed to be older( and to me wiser). When i was first married my OH wanted everything high tech.Had to be the best of everything. On credit of course! We're still paying for it now even though we are seperated now.Oh to be younger and wiser again!

  • I am 30, married with a 16 month old baby girl. When we first met MSE OS we both earned a really good income - but had to live at opposite ends of the UK despite being married(this was 2005). With MSE I managed to cut our bills and expenses so much that I was able to leave work and have MORE money than before! Time at home = baking, gardening etc - all the things I really enjoy. So we planned to have our baby and I am now at medical school as a mature student - something I really wanted to do but never thought we'd be able to afford for me to stop work.

I think the key is to work out where you get value for money personally - I would never pay someone to do my ironing and always cook from scratch but no way am I giving up a few glasses of wine on the weekend! Likewise some people love chocolate which I'm not really a fan of.

My mum and granny are/were proper OS-ers and I don't think my granny bought a loaf of bread in her life - Irish soda bread was the norm, made fresh each morning. But I don't think we should beat ourselves up if we can't reach everything we aspire to - my granny never had to "earn" a wage by working for someone else, but she ran a home from the age of 12.

I have quite a few friends who grow vegetables and bake, and we all find it relaxing and enriching. You can be as much or as little OS as you like, I think the key is to feel you are not overpaying for anything! (Eg we don't have many takeaways these days, but went to a new Indian restaurant with friends yesterday and really enjoyed it).

    Love to all...

  • I am fairly os. But in my 20's 30 years ago I was more os as there was no choice. There were no credit cards so you had to save up for anything you wanted. Credit ws just becoming available in the form of HP (hire purchase) and your income was checked thouroughly to make sure you could afford it.
We didn't have the muxt have it new and now mentallity of today. Couples set up home with practically everything second hand.
    There were no disposable nappies.
It was commonplace to make your own and childrens clothes.
I think, myself it is largley a case of peoples percieved expectations that is different now than then.
I didn't go abroad on holiday until I was 18 and that is only because my parents were quite well off.
Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

Yippee, there are more, I just knew it :D

I'm 24, single and live with my parents - I just can't possibly afford to move out on my own at the moment. I can sympathise with the 'feeling old' - I know I do sometimes. I cook for my family, and bake...we're a household of adults, so we all know how much it costs to run a home.

We tend to be old style to save money for the things we want/want to do. Like holidays etc.

I don't like going out particualrtly, with the express aim of getting drunk. Infact I don't really drink at all. I remember not so long back me and my mum were planning to have a drinkie after finishing a long day of chores...the time came, and we were both saying 'ooooh, you know, I'd actually prefer a cup of tea:D '.

It'd be nice if this thread kept up, as I'd personally love to make some OS friends that were my age (I work from home, and don't really have many friends to be honest - I find it hard to meet people my age that I have stuff in common with :o )

Hiya! I'm 24 (for another 5 weeks or so!!) and will always be gutted I didn't find this site when I was a student, not least cos I would have had time to enter loads more comps!!

I have always been quite money conscious though, so I love finding more bargains! I also adore knitting and crochet (it is cool, I don't care what anyone says!) so find loads of useful threads for that here too!

The only problem I have is finding time and motivation to switch bills and bank accounts. I know I should get on it (especially opening my first ISA) but still find it all a bit intimidating. My husband and I are still recovering from taking out first mortgage last year I think!!

I just wondered if there were any other OS-ers on here in their 20's? And how many?

I LOVE this site, and mainly OS & DFW - but there are so many people of a similiar age 'out there' to me who have no idea, spend all of their wages (well, that used to me actually before I got into debt, but thats besides the point  ), only spend money on booze and just generally waste sooooo much and spend more money than necessary.

Dont really think I have a point to this post other than that I couldnt imagine not being OS or MSE - I dont know how people can afford not to be? And this is me talking without having a OH or family to feed.

Do you think more people are in debt than the statistics say? (this is not a criticism to people in debt obviously, as I've been there done that), but I dont know how non MSE people can afford to live the lifestyles they seem to as things are bl**dy expensive.

Pleased I got into debt and found this board. I know you dont hear that every day but I dread to think how much of a mess my life would be without having my lightbulb moment and ultimately finding this site - and knowing there is a whole community out there. Makes me feel like not such a geek! hehe

Love the 'what OS things do only you do' (or the title along those lines), taken me hours to read! :D

    xx

My god, you do waffle woman! ;)

Do you owe me an email or do I owe you one?

I'm 27 and my mum still makes my bed. How [STRIKE]cool[/STRIKE] sad is that? :) :rotfl:
