Scrap copper

a scappy had estimated it at about £700 worth.
Before you go deducting anything of his bill, you need to prove that it was worth £700. No one will know what it is worth until it's actually weighed in. Also scrap values change daily, so £700 last week may be only £500 this week, or it could be £1000. If you went too court, the first thing his defence brief will say is "Mr Homeowner can you prove it was worth £700?" And you will say "No" Case dismissed. If he is guilty of theft, then that is another matter.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
We are in the middle of having our 5 bed detached Victorian house replumbed. Before the plumber started we asked him to save all the copper for us to dispose of as a scappy had estimated it at about £700 worth., it's a big ol house.
Scrappys always over estimate scrap values before they come and buy. Then they say how theres not as much there as they thought and offer you 50%. Then its take it or leave it.
Oldest trick in the bookIf the plumbers quote includes "disposal of rubbish " then I think you will have a job to prove your case..

It doesn't include disposal, we have a skip and so all rubbish was going in there. Even if he halfed the price of the metal it is £350, money we need at the moment. Renovating is an expensive business.0 -

But the issue is that you will never know how much it was worth as you didn't weigh it in. It may as well be worth £70,000 as the estimate is completely irrelevant.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
The plumber knows how much he got. (pretty stupid plumber if he's giving copper away)
Ask if he is willing to give that to you in a discount or cash.
Or does he want the police involved and his reputation tarnished.
Email him back asking for information on the vehicle that uplifted it as the police need it.0 -
You have no proof that you asked the plumber to keep the scrap, you have no real idea of it's value, so you have no case. If as you say there was bags and bags of scrap why didn't you weigh it in as you went along ?
I have no doubt the scrap was weighed in but it's his word against yours, as others have said wait till the job is complete then discuss a reasonable solution, but you'll be lucky to get £1500 -
It wasn't a boiler and pipes, the whole house is being replumbed, there was a huge amount of it. Bags and bags of it, the scrap guy had already seen it and it was him that estimated the £700.
Bags and bags of what though, pipe by any chance?
Is scrap guy a friend? or did he just turn up saying "i'm here to pick up the scrap" and the plumber pointed him in the direction.
Local dealers to me can be seen with lorrys parked up here there and every where helping themselve to whats ever on offer, if they have permission or not.0 -
presumably your plumber didn't remove all the pipework in one day , so why didn't you either go and pick it up yourself or ask him to put it in a shed/ garage , even if he put it in the skip or left it outside it would walk , there are plenty of dealers who drive around looking for stuff to lift , i had an old rad outside my house for a couple of days that walked before i could get rid of it ,0

It's custom and pratice that plumbers keep and weigh-in removed copper and lead. Did you ask to keep it before or after you got your quote? If it was after, he won't have factored it in and would be reluctant to give it up.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0
