Scrap copper

Before the plumber started we asked him to save all the copper for us to dispose of as a scappy had estimated it at about £700 worth.

Went to house and no copper to be seen, spoke to him and he said that he gave it to some scrap men who came around looking for metal, along with the old iron pipes, old boiler etc.
What should I do next? We are basically £700 down now, surely as a plumber he would have known the value of it? Or at least had a rough idea.

I would have thought technically the plumber could be done for theft, as you asked him to save it he was in no position to pass it on or sell it without your permission.

Either he reimburses you for your loss or you tell him you will report the matter to the police and they will deal with it accordingly.

He probably has a scrappy he deals with on a regular basis - I'd make it known you're not to pleased, but wait till the job is finished and you have any house keys back from him. Then I'd give him the choice of going to the police, or deducting £700 form your bill.;)

The materials which form part of your house i.e the installed pipework, fixtures and fittings are your property. If they are removed/cut up/piled in the corner, they are still your property. Unauthorised removal could be deemed theft? did you give him permission to remove those materials? Clearly you didnt. He therefore needs to either return them or make good the loss.

It wasn't a boiler and pipes, the whole house is being replumbed, there was a huge amount of it. Bags and bags of it, the scrap guy had already seen it and it was him that estimated the £700.

hes sold it, i have a plumber friend and hes always at the scrappy which is aways at least £100 a visit
you asked him to keep it, hes trying it on and has made extra from it, so when the bill comes i would deduct the £700 from it
