Awwww, DarylD - I'm so, so sorry to hear that.
I popped in earlier to see if you'd posted and thought that it may be bad news as you hadn't.
Have lots of cuddles and hugs tonight and take comfort from the fact that you can give him a dignified end and that he doesn't have to suffer.
It's a terrible thing to go through but at home is the best way as there's no stress for him in having to go to the vets.

darlyd, I am so sorry to hear that. You must be devastated.
It's such an awful decision to have to make, but I really think that you're doing the right thing for him. Far better for him not to have to suffer any more.
We had our last cat put to sleep at home as she was so stressed by being taken to the vet's surgery. At least he'll be at home and not in a strange place - which must be of some comfort.
It's never easy, I know. Feels like hell at first but it does get better in time, I promise.
Will be thinking of you and Sam.

I'm so sorry to hear your tragic news, this is something we have been dealing with today too. Our 13 year old staffie has had arthritis in his back legs for a few years now, treated with metacam but last night his front legs gave way. He can barely walk now. We are holding onto some faint hope he's pulled something so have left him today to see if there is any improvement and upped his metacam to the max. We are taking him to the vets tomorrow night and fear we may be in the same boat as you.
I know its hurts, but its the most loving thing and owner can do in your (and mine) situation. We have to put our feelings aside and be comforted by the many memories you have, and lots of photo's no doubt! If yours is anything like ours he'll have been full of personality and have friends galore (even treat cupboards in other peoples' houses!). God bless you all and sending my love and hugs to you all. Thank you so much
We keep saying he looks so normal, We can't understand why this has happened, he is only 9 (10 in October). He has been my husbands right hand man since he was 8 weeks old, they were alone together for 3 years then we came into his life. And pretty much took over . He has been all over England with hubby, doggy friendly B&B's, Fishing and even work every day. Wow. . He has been all over England with hubby, doggy friendly B&B's, Fishing and even work every day. Wow.
Hubby keeps saying he will have to get another dog, as that part of him will be missing. The 4.30am walks etc. My Dog is to lazy to even come downstairs, only when she hears the biscuits in her bowl. She is just not a social dog. She has been brill though, she knows Sammy not good. But if a new puppy came in the next few weeks/months (I just know his mum will convince him soon), Molly won't like it, she is to irritable to have a puppy hanging off her neck, she hates my 4 yr old trying to dress her up, she to old for this now, it will kill her. And kill me too, because I would see it like he trying to replace Sammy.
He is sleeping/snoring now on the rug, by daddies feet, This is so hard.
I/We are going to miss his bum shaking, and him coming to the door with his big red rubber ball..
Vet will cremate him and we will have his ashes. Hubby wants to scatter them round his tree where his rubber tire is, but I want to keep them and have them right next to his staffy statue. Where My Molly's would be when her time comes.
Oh the month of May is just the worst month ever. (Lost FIL May last yr, night before our wedding ) )
I think I have taken them for granted, I was for ever shouting, get down, get out, move... But I suppose that's the norm when they have muddy paws . .
Hope he understood our talk today.
Will update tomorrow when this is all over.
Going to be the weirdest thing not seeing him here, hearing his high pitched snore.0

Im so very sorry to hear your dreadful news, but you have made the right decision for him. You have cared for and loved him - so many dogs never know that sort of love.
I will be thinking of you all xxx0

I'm so sorry for you all.
You are doing the right thing. And I agree about it being at home - much less stressful for Sam to be in his own bed.
It will be very peaceful and much better than having him suffer.
It is a shock to you, though, when they're ill without much warning. Our first dog (also a Sam!) to be put to sleep was the youngest of our dogs at that time and the only symptom was weight loss. Otherwise he was fine - so when the vet broke the news that it was serious we were stunned.
We made the same decision as you. It was heartbreaking - but we didn't want him to suffer.
I'll be thinking of you all tomorrow. xx20p Savers Club #1020

I'm sorry to hear of your news. It's an awful decision to make; even when you know it is the right thing to do you still feel guilty, at least I did. I understand what you said about always saying "get down" and how bad it makes you feel now. I remember when I had to take the decision to put Angie, or Angel as I sometimes called her, to sleep, I felt so wracked with guilt - all those times I'd had to tell her that I was busy when she'd just come over for attention - but you have to remember the good things and all the good memories you have of your friend.
With Angie, we buried her ashes and planted a rose tree above them, so there will always be a symbol of her life where she now rests.
 All the best.0
