Hey the person who said it can be quite common was an on call vet, of whom We do not know. But tonight the person I spoke too told us to take him straight down as it has been going on for 40 mins, last one only lasted few minutes then he came round fine.

God I am so worried, palpitations galore. :(

Sorry, I missed the on call part but even so I would be making a complaint, at the very least to your normal vet. I assume that your vet uses a third party service to provide on call cover rather than employing someone in house to do this? They should be made aware of the incompetence of the people that they have providing this cover as it speaks badly for the vet themself.

I do hope that your dog turns out fine. Best wishes.

    Thank you.

He has come round fine, bit groggy, he has antibiotics to take just in case for infection of his brain, & epileptic drugs, we collecting him at 6pm, they want to see him again tomorrow for a check. They want to see how he goes before they refer him for a brain scan. (I feel useless, I been telling OH to insist on a scan so we know what we are dealing with.)

Getting my B itch in over next few days for check up.

God This is horrid, they are our children.

I'm so sorry to hear about your poor dog. We had an epileptic cat and the first grand mal she had was horrendous. I'll never forget it.

I agree with Tropez; the advice the on-call vet gave to you was disgraceful. Definitely bring that up with your own vet and make a complaint. If nothing else, it might stop them from being so flippant with another similar case.

I shall be keeping my fingers tightly crossed that all works out okay for your dog. I know how very worrying this must be for you but, if it's any comfort, our cat went on to live for several years afterwards and eventually died of something else entirely. She was on medication which kept the fits mostly under control (she only seemed to have minor ones, which weren't anywhere near as scary, after that).

    Good luck!

    Thank you.

Well Hubby woke me up at 4am before he was setting off to work, He had giving him his meds, He had been fitting when he woke up, and now he is all wired, won't settle down, running up down stairs etc, And he is having mini fits. Hubby is coming home for 7am, and we will go from there. Get kids off to school and take him together. I think today or by the end of the week If they don't go, He is going to end up being put to sleep. :( . It's not Sam any more.. Love him so much, can't believe this is happening to us. How can he be OK one day then suddenly wham he has gone? Life is so cruel..

Thinking of you. It's horrid when our pets develop problems without warning.

    Hi Op,

I went through the same thing last month, I have a 10 year old boxer who started having fits in the night. I have been back and forth to the vets and he is now on a medication called Epiphen which is controlling the fits and he is back to normal, there is hope, so don't give up yet. He has to have regular blood taken and is been checked up weekly, so it is quite expensive, but worth every penny.

    Good luck.

OK, he could have an infection that is triggering this and medication could sort it (like it does in people if they get an infection on the brain) so please think of him being PTS as a very last resort as this may just be a temporary thing.

Please let us know how it goes, praying your little man will be just fine. xx

I'd also ask them about getting your girl checked incase it is an infection that can be passed on to her but I guess they will not know until he has had bloods done.

As with humans, it can sometimes take a little time to get the medication and dosage right so don't lose hope yet.

Still keeping my fingers crossed that all will be well.

    Hello,
Our Lurcher had similar symptoms. He started fitting one night, foaming at the mouth. Looking like he was choking etc. He now has meds which are given to him AFTER he has a fit. To help bring him back round.

However he does have trouble remembering who we are, or where he is after one of these. Our vet recommended putting a towel over his head and try and get him to lie still. Even if wehave to bearhug him to the ground. You want his brain to have as little activity as possible, so either a dark room or towel over the head shuts off one of his senses.

Ours had a couple in the space of a few weeks and then nothing for ages, and he doesn't seem to remember any of it. If you need any more advice or need to vent. Give me a shout, as I know how distressing it can be the first time you see it.
