Dog having a seizure

We have 2 staffys Dog & a !!!!!, They are both coming up to 10 years old.
2 Weeks ago our Dog started to have a fit on the sofa, husband put him on the floor and he carried it on, then acted dippy for a few minutes then laid down, He was then back to normal. My Husband rung the on call Vet and was told it can be quite normal? Never heard this before. He is a normal healthy dog with a smelly bottom (Has his glands clean regular), Moans quite a bit for attention (serious, he even starts to limp if you don't give him any).
Quite worried what do you think we could do?
I would like to take them both to the vets for an MOT, I know my !!!!! had a swollen pancreas when she was cut open due to severe sickness, turnt out to be gastroenteritis (sp) 3 years ago. Have had her on expensive dog food, But My husband just informed me he gives her cheap nasty tesco tin food like our Dog with her expensive food mixed in. (I work during feeding time). How much would an MOT be? Such as bloods for cholestrial (sp) perhaps xray of pancreas (if this is at all possible) etc?
Forgot to mention my !!!!! has a soft lump on her tummy, she had it removed 3 years ago, biopsy done all neg but to keep eye on it, it's getting bigger?
Sorry for all the Questions.
They are getting on now and it terrifies me for anything to be wrong with them that I don't know about.

Hi, I think you really need to take them to the vet's for an MOT and see what they say. The vet will be able to say what (if any) tests would be recommendable and the costs of this - costs of treatment vary enormously depending on where you live so you really need to get this info direct from your vet.
Re the food, yes you need to feed the best quality food that you can afford - buying a good quality dry food and then mixing in cheap tinned carp is practically throwing good money after bad. Tinned food available in supermarkets is usually not to a high quality (poor meat content and lots of fillers and nasty colouring etc to make it taste good). You'd be better mixing the dry with some veg etc. I used to buy the big frozen value packs of chicken, cook and then freeze into portion sizes to mix with my dogs dry food (only gets veg now).

I think going to the vets would be a good idea, to get the lump checked out, and the seizure.
I don't know what they can to check out causes for the seizure, I imagine they don't do EEGs for dogs? From a quick Google, it looks like staffys can have an inherited condition that can cause seizures, maybe this is what the vet meant when he said it was common? (google L-2-HGA)
Re: the lady dog, I don't know if they'd want to anaesthetise a dog of that age for x-rays etc, if she doesn't have any symptoms, might be too risky? But the vet will be able to tell you what is safe/sensible to do.0 -
I had a staffy with epilepsy - that started after she was neutered. she had grand mal seizures like those you describe. The vet gave her medication but it only reduced the number of fits she had each day. apart from that she was her usual fab self! We learned to cope with them. even the kids knew not to let her up on the furniture and if she had a fit to put a newpaper under her back end ASAP! then to leave her come out of it and give her peace until she was back to normal. I dont think she even remembered the fits once they were over and she lived until 12 yrs (which isnt bad for a staffy) until she had to have another operation (for a malignant tumour) and every time the vet tried to bring her out from the anaesthetic she fitted badly. so we had to have her PTS.
I honestly dont think the fits affected her quality of life - but I wouldnt take the risk of a dog which is epileptic having an anaesthetic now.0 -
I'm quite surprised you vet didn't want to see your dog that had a fit for the frist time.
It may be nothing but it would be a wise idea to full check up0 -
Our dog had a stroke, looked like he was fitting & after his head was lopsided. He was given medication to help with the tilt (it sorted it most of the time & was only noticable if he was really tired or had just woken up!). I would get them down for an MOT.
I would also get the fatty lump sorted if it is getting bigger, Chester had a fatty lump which we were keeping an eye on, it grew a lot bigger quite quickly & when they operated it ended up quite a major op as it was under quite a deep layer, rather than close to the surface.0 -
First thing I would do is find a new vet. Any vet that shrugs off a dog having a fit as being normal doesn't deserve to have a licence.
Fitting can be a symptom of many things, from strokes to brain tumours. Although we vaccinate against it in the UK, the reason many vets advocate yearly boosters is because of canine distemper, which also causes fitting in dogs, and can be carried and spread by numerous wild animals. I'm of course not suggesting your dog has any of these but a vet should at the very least want to rule out any serious illnesses.
Don't take a chance, find a new vet, and I'd even consider reporting your current one to the RCVS.0 -
OH MY GOD
Our Dog has been having a fit now in and out for 40 minutes, husband just rushed him down the emergency vets, I wish I could of gone (kids in bed) as husband is way to upset, I am so worried now. Hey the person who said it can be quite common was an on call vet, of whom We do not know. But tonight the person I spoke too told us to take him straight down as it has been going on for 40 mins, last one only lasted few minutes then he came round fine.
God I am so worried, palpitations galore.0 -
They have knocked him out and are keeping him in. Will update. Bit relieved now, he is in good hands? They will get to the bottom of it? ----hopefully yes to both.0
