FF4 is great, but I don't trust Adobe Flash plugin at all. Nasty piece of software - a haven for malware.

    A few suggestions

Flash - I use the Flashblock add-on which blocks flash on a site unless you specifically click on it to activate (or whitelist the site) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashblock/ This saves me a lot of hassle ;)

jackj - I think the 7000 bugs you are referring were at the beta stage and the note was published to show they were working hard and improving the software before releasing it (see http://blog.mozilla.com/blog/2011/02/25/get-the-latest-mozilla-firefox-4-beta-test-your-favorite-websites-and-add-ons/ ). I personally I like Firefox because they are quick in publishing updates so you get the benefit of security and performance patches

Geoffo M - Are your crashes related to flash or Firefox in general? If it is Firefox in general, it is worth doing a spring clean of your cache and cookies (Firefox Button -> History -> Clear Recent History) which should help stability and speed. If problem persists you can try creating a new profile and moving your bookmarks across.

in addition to Flashblock, NoScript is also very useful //

For myself, I found it was too excessive for general use as well.

A good compromise is Adblock Plus with Easylist (for general ads, will block malware infected ads as a side effect) and MalwareDomainList (https://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions) to stop content loading from known malware sites. Doesn't interfere with browsing, except for a few sites that detect adblocking (easy to disable just for those sites) and keeps itself updated.

If I'm going to an unsafe site deliberately for testing, I'll run the browser sandboxed (using Sandboxie).

I am using now from portable apps as Russ suggested (not his suggestion though....) I find it is OK (and thus works more or less on Linux under Wine too) however I just tried to thank Russ in cooliris preview and show the thanks he got first but that doesn't work (so Thanks Russ i will come back and thank you in a sec) It does seem faster (now...) but I will wait a bit longer before it replaces FF 3.6 permanently.

Why run it in wine? Can you not download the linux version from their website which appears self contained and runs find from the folder its extracted to and will automatically use your preferences in the home folder.
