  • and they're going to track us how???? Because if they think that fitting some sort of system to the car will work then I'm afraid they'll find mine nailed to a fence post somewhere if these plans go ahead.

Road tax isn't spent on roads. Dropping it for some = reduction in overall taxation = never in a month of sundays.

Who said anything about dropping the road tax. We're going to be charged this new tax as well as road tax and theyre talking about putting up the price of the tolls at the Dartford Tunnel. When the new bridge was built we were told that once it was paid for then the tolls would be stopped. Well Im not sure who owned the contract but its been sold and whoevers bought it is talking about raising the toll instead of stopping it.

I am not sure you are right there tesuhoha, my understanding is that the usage tax will replace the road tax .. however only time will tell. The government may decide to keep what is currently the 'road tax' and regard it as an environment tax. I do however think that this may be an effort to ultimately bring the cost of fuel throughout the EC in line (at the minute the government could not cope with the loss of revenue)

Personally I am in favour of a per mile taxation system ... outside of ceertain things that are there to serve the greater community (e.g. NHS, core education etc.) I have always believed that each individual should pay for those services that they actually use. Why should a little old pensioner that does 1000 miles per year have to pay the same road tax as someone who does 20K miles per year.

I saw your petition on the other thread but like so many of these things all it says is what we do not want ... it doesn't attempt to provide alternatives. The existing system is not sustainable in the 21st century .. new thinking is required.

Take away car tax and put it on petrol.

    It'd save us millions.

No tax discs to print no one employed to do all the admin(there must be hundreds) non of us having to p1ss about going to the post office etc etc

Its just a tax thats there to employ people and is probably the most easily stremlineable thing possible into petrol tax.
  • I already pay a great deal of road tax for each mile that I travel.

Our fuel is hugely overtaxed as it is and quite simply, the more miles that I travel, the more tax is extorted from me via my fuel usage.

If the case can be made for road tolls, presumably on grounds of congestion and pollution together with a reluctance to build more roads...

... why do the Easyjetsetters amongst us (AND HMG) object to much higher airport taxes to solve the same problem? Anyone here want an international airport built across the fence from them? I am fed up with the car-using public subsidising three flights a year to Benidorm for the great unwashed.

    Absolutely.

How about redistributing a bit of the road tolls, car and petrol duty over to jet fuel and airport charges. This DOES amount to a subsidy and is ridiculous in view of the fact that the vast bulk of 'no-frills' flights are for pleasure purposes whereas road traffic is generally work/commerce.

Am I right in thinking that aviation fuel has zero tax on it? Outrageous.

No offence intended MTC but as you are trying to lose weight(good luck btw) perhaps using your car less might be the way to go. It will save on your petrol costs as well. A win-win situation no?

    No offence taken :D

But I'm travelling to the other side of Bristol tomorrow and I'm going to do a round trip of about 500 miles. So sadly, your good suggestion will have to wait a bit longer !

On more serious front, my car does about 38mpg on diesel, and diesel currently costs 91.9ppt, of which 60.64 plt is tax.
So, my car will use 60lts of diesel and I'll pay HMG £36.38 in tax for the pleasure of the trip or, I'm paying about 8p per mile in tax already.

But I gladly & happily take on your thoughts of using my shoe leather more, and my car less.

I only do about 2500 miles per year, so per mile, tax is quite high for me :D

Nelly's point is a good one, adding this tax cost to petrol so that those who use it more pay more. It would also mean that anyone coming in from abroad would be contributing if they purchase their petrol here.

DH travels a 50mile round trip each day to work, so of course that particular route whould be heavily subsidised:D In fact, he should receive a rebate for using that route, testing it's safety everyday is quite a public service you know:D
