Im not convinced that, even with the best public transport in the world, we still wouldnt have similar problems. The demise of public transport over the years has largely been due to lack of demand, as car ownership has become a realistic option to far more people as car prices, used especially, have dropped and wages increased. People like their cars, its part of our mentality to want our own space, and they need to be discouraged from using them, but it will always be more convienent to take your own car when and where you like rather than relying on public transport."I'm not even supposed to be here today."0 -
Hi,
I think it is better to let people know whats going on around them because alot just watch and belive what they are told and don't question it...
The thing is if people just say that they refuse to pay, what the powers going to do fine them all... probably, then what take them all to court, put them all in prison, I don't think so, as long as enough people resist.
With the Iraq war people were rightly against it, but they did not have the power to use their pocket and voice to change it, this will directly effect their daily lives...
I would rather resist these bills that they keep bringing in, instead of just sitting back and thinking you can't change things..

If the case can be made for road tolls, presumably on grounds of congestion and pollution together with a reluctance to build more roads...
... why do the Easyjetsetters amongst us (AND HMG) object to much higher airport taxes to solve the same problem? Anyone here want an international airport built across the fence from them? I am fed up with the car-using public subsidising three flights a year to Benidorm for the great unwashed.0 -

The problem is that although we are being priced out of our cars, many of us have already been priced out of public transport. It costs less for me to drive from Aberdeen to Edinburgh (for example) than to take the train, and it's quicker. If I'm travelling with one other person then the cost of public transport becomes double.for more info check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk . You'll find me there.

yes, I realise I may appear cold and heartless a lot of the time.0 -
You have no doubt all heard of the proposed tax on drivers where each car is to be tracked and charged for using parts of the road system. The prices will vary according to the time of day. Peter Roberts worked out how much it would cost him to visit his relatives and then decided to start a petition against these proposed measures. I think it started by him emailing 20 friends to sign it. It is now a government petition, so far over 343,000 people have signed the petition. I am hoping to get a few more by posting the link here.

Received an email from a friend about this today.....First I had heard of it.

Well exactly. It costs a ridiculous amout to travel on the trains - and they don't always run on time and they aren't very clean. Not to mention that they charge more at the times they know people are going to work; if they genuinly wanted commuters to use public transport, they would scrap peak charges.
People do like using their cars; they are clean (well to each persons level), you can listen to music, get straight to where you are going and you will only be held up if there is bad traffic or you break down. Traffic is however, getting worse.
Standing at wet, cold bus stops is not attractive considering the alternative of jumping into your car. Supermarkets and shops that are now often out of town are not well served by transport, probably due to lack of demand, as more people have cars. Who wants to lug the weekly shop home on a bus?
Lives have changed, people want to take their kids to school on the way to work, want to go out straight from work - doing this quickly means driving and not relying on public transport. Flexible working hours means that car sharing isn't an option for all that many people.
We have become accustomed to the car focussed way of life, and I dont really know what the answer is to change that. Not buying unnecessary toiletries 2024 26/53 UU, 25 IN0 -
It would be unfairer on the less well off. A better system would be to tax the more expensive cars more heavily. If you can afford a good car then you should not begrudge having to pay more for the privilege of driving it.0
