Oh and i forgot, when i gave my manager the letter from my doctor asking for a chair to be provided, I heard her say " f***ing lazy b*tch" directed towards me. I was so unhappy but didn't want to leave and miss out on my maternity entitlements so i stuck it out till my maternity leave and never went back.

So when you are next in Woolies and the staff are not as quick on the tills as you would like them to be, remember they are under alot of pressure from the management and alot are bullied too, with the attitude of "well if you don't like the way we treat you, theres the door".

I'm not sure how long ago this was, but I believe there are laws to protect employees from this kind of treatment. Someone in such a situation now might want to considering speaking to a union rep or citizens advice bureau, and finding out about "constructive dismissal".
  • I aint boycotting Woolies!!!!! ...

I now have a Trike that I didnt pay for sitting in my Garage waiting for me to get around to listing it on Ebay or similar!!!

But was that just a really cr*p manager, or are all woolworths managers like that?

Well my husband works for the clothing logistics company that deliver the clothing to Woolworths and he said that the managers talk to their staff like they are something on the bottom of their shoe. For the minimum wage we were expected to train new members of staff (normally done by management), finish jobs if it meant staying behind over hours and not getting paid for the extra time, being slagged off if one job didnt get done while you were busy serving customers, I got a disciplinary because some sweets went out of date when I was off sick, I should have reduced them and put them on sale before i went off sick, so i offered to buy them at full price (4 boxes @ £3.99 each ) and was told no we cant do that they are out of date, after which they were placed in the staff canteen. I was bollo**ed for making them lose money!!!

My previous managers of which i have had 5 have been great to work for and you wouldnt mind doing a favour here and there because it was appreciated, but my last manager was a complete Hitler clone who was out to get rid of long standing staff (who were on double time on sundays) to bring in new staff who only got single time on sundays.

When this manager took over 19 members of staff left because of her, one even took early retirement and she had been with woolies for 25 years. She then took on people she knew and employed her son too.

Assuming this is true and not hearsay then she obviously did a good job ... you say she was out to get rid of certain employees .. she suceeded, she met her objectives. Far too often managers in large stores are in the job for no other reason than they have worked their and asked to be a manager, they often do not have proper management training. This is one of those stories were I would love to hear 'the other side' ... I am sure it would be something along the lines of 'the staff had got lazy and set in their ways, their customer service skills were poor and nobody had tried to modernise the system. My objective fom head office was to bring in new vibrant staff at the lower end of the pay scale to imporve profitability.' etc. Who knows?

Personally I find Woolworths staff a running joke ... I think they are trained to move about as slowly as possible, put things through the till as slowly as possible and deliberately ignore customers especially when they are in the middle of chewing a piece of gum or discussing how drunk they will be getting that night. Around our way if you get bad or slow service the joke is that they are 'obviously an ex Woolworths employee'.

Well her judgement of character wasn't very good, she took on a stockroom boy, who was always late and kept having friends come into the store, chatting away to them instead of getting on with the job, who was later convicted along with his twin brother for killing their grandma, for her money. Lack of staff meant customers were kept waiting while a supervisor was being called, she was never on the sales floor and when a customer asked to see the manager we were told to tell them she was in a meeting (more like drinking coffee in the canteen).

She would tell you to do something a certain way eg put a display out, and then after it was all done she would say it was crap and to do it another way.
The only good thing she did do was to make the office worker do more than just count the money and balance the tills, where other managers failed, and also she arranged internal security to catch two cashiers fiddling stock through the tills serving family and not putting all items through.
I got took off one department after being told it was overstaffed, then the same day I came off it there were two new members of staff who didnt even know how to order stock etc. Perhaps she did all this to deflect attention to what she was doing, conducting a relationship in the store (this i know first hand as i walked in on them kissing and fondling in the stockroom) and her being a married woman as well.

well don't stop there.. you get to the exciting juicey gossipy bit and then just stop ... we need more info :D When I worked in the store of a supermarket you knew one of the trainee managers had one of his girlfriends up at the back of the store if the outers of cornflakes were arranged in a particular manner .. thy created themselves a little hidey-hole where nobody could see them :D
