My account was set up quickly and easily, no problems with moving money, it's all good. Only issue was waiting 20 minutes to speak to customer service but I called the number given on saynoto0870 ( 0191 2558377) and just left the phone on speakerphone while I did other stuff, so I wasn't too bothered. Plus it was my fault as I'd forgotten the password.

I think I am coming to the same conclusion. I am having no luck at all in logging in to their website and calling them is a waste of time, literally. Fortunately I only have £250 with them.

I had wanted an alternative to the Coventry First account and may now have to consider the Brum Midshires account instead.

    A missed opportunity, Icesave.

Oh dear, I have just opened an account but I seem to be waiting for them to send me an access number or something. As for Biham Midshires, their account opening process was a nightmare. Their blurb says you can open an account from just £1 NOT ONLY £1.I sent £2000 and they promptly lost £1999. The first person I spoke to was a dopey girl who couldn't care less and said she had no idea where this money was. The second time I phoned I got a bright lad who seemed quite concerned and said he would sort it out which he did. It's not possible to send them secure emails either.
Internet banks are supposed to save time and manpower so why do we have to phone all the time? Then I noticed I could send money by electronic transfer but their booklet did not say that the A/c they quote is for CHAPS payments so the second lot of money - a large sum, also got lost in their holding account. I'll be closing this account so I do hope I have better luck with Ice Save.

The account took a while to set up, but then I knew it would because they told me it would take about 10 working days.

I pulled £250 in at the beginning, and I will pull some more in soon.

Not needed to contact them so wouldnt know how hard it is.

So far so good for me.

Ditto with ICICI for the record.

So far, only HSBC have cocked anything up.

It took about three weeks for them to set up my account (over the Xmas period). I got a letter from them a few days after applying online, confirming my DD details. But I had to chase them up to get my User ID for the website. I called them on 28 Dec and received the User ID in the post on 31 Dec.

From then on, everything seems to be OK - website works fine - although I've yet to try a withdrawl or deposit.

Must admit I found the whole DD business during the online application somewhat confusing - setting up a DD seemed (to me at least) to veer from mandatory to optional.

Brilliant account with excellent service. You're unlikely to find one better.

So far I've been perfectly happy with Icesave. Opened the account online a couple of weeks before Xmas with just a £250 deposit as I wanted to be sure the account functioned smoothly before committing further funds. Got confirmation of my user ID etc by post before Xmas, then the next day a postal reminder of what I needed to send re proof of ID, including clear info re what was acceptable in copy form and what needed to be original documents. Sent this off and a couple of days after Xmas got the documents I sent in back with a thank you letter. Meanwhile I'd set up the DD at my current account bank - by phone - and have since transferred further funds to Icesave.

The only bit I had to do by phone was the DD on my current account and that took 3 minutes.

I'm happy with Icesave and grateful for this site for pointing the account out to me.

As for others' experiences, I think I fared well partly because I've been internet banking for years, including with Egg who have a sort of similar(ish) system. It may also be that Icesave have been overwhelmed by the reaction to the interest rate they offer - you may say they should have been aware of this, but I get the feeling that this site is generating "money behaviour" (don't know how better to describe this) on a scale that a lot of organisations would find hard to cope with - and that can only be a good thing.

If I decided to stick with it i.e. waiting for the application to be finalised, do I take it that with this DD arrangement they take out £250 each month from my linked account? If not, what is the DD for?

No. The DD is purely a mechanism for 'pulling' funds into the account or withdrawing funds out of the account. You can choose 'when', 'if' and 'how much', although I seem to recall that there is a minimum additional deposit limit of £100 (not sure how hard and fast that is though).

Deleted_User is right - the DD is for convenience so that when you want to deposit or withdraw funds the technical arrangements are already set up and all you have to do is tell Icesave you want to withdraw or deposit. And by "tell" I mean do it online.

You deposit and withdraw when you want and how much you want. If you want to make regular deposits without taking action each month, then set up a regular saver cash ISA or account.
