Bag stolen in store on Oxford Street

I had my bag snatched while shoe shopping with a friend in a store on Oxford Street. There are rows of shoe aisles and we were sitting on the seats at the end of one of these aisles. We (foolishly) put our bags on the floor by our feet but made sure we didnt go far and kept an eye on them. I asked my friend to watch my bag for a second while I picked up a pair of shoes on the shelf behind, when I turned around my bag was gone!! My friend was still sitting right there and hadn't moved and there were no other customers about.

There are no gaps where someone could have reached through and grabbed it, they would have had to pick it up literally in front of my friend. As soon as I saw it was gone I ran to the front of the store assuming that whoever took it would make a quick exit.

The security guard told us it happens all the time and the thieves usually snatch your bag and take out what they want while still in the store and then dump your bag somewhere in the shop. When they close the store in the evenings and have a tidy up they find stolen bags stashed all over. I called the store the next morning and they told me it hadn't shown up so I assumed everything was taken. BUT the following morning (2 days later) the store called and said they found my bag!!

This whole situation makes me think it could be the staff, there were no customers near us at the time my bag was taken. I think the staff probably take the bags out the back to rummage through and since they are working they cant leave the store so they have to dump the bag somewhere in the shop. Surely if it was a member of the public they would just take the bag and get out of the store rather than sit somewhere in the shop (??)

NEVER EVER put your bag down, even if you think you are being alert and watching it at all times. It can be gone in a split second.

Your suggestion that it is the staff is potentially defamatory - be very careful what you say!

I doubt very much that it would be them anyway, Oxford Street (and other prime tourist areas) are renowned for this sort of thing. Next time, be more careful.

Could you get a copy of the security camera footage? That may show something?
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

I actually dont believe it could be the staff, your bag is responsibility since you decide to carry a bag with you,

see if you can either get a copy of or get them to check the cctv
  • Just giving my opinion based on what happened
  • The security guard said thats the only area in the store with no CCTV, so whoever does this obviously knows that

You are accusing people of being complicit in a crime. You can't go around saying things like that without some kind of evidence!

Your friend was sat next to you when it happened - maybe it was her? :p
