The point being if the person buying your item on eBay was from Nigeria none of you would give him your bank details.
  • That's a very good point, wish I'd thought of that

I would if I was going to post to Nigeria but it is one country i have blocked due to postal issues, so the situation would not arise. I would not take a cheque or even paypal from them either as I would not ship to them.

However in this instance the OP is selling a computer so is unlikely to be selling it outside the UK..so again, I do not see your point.

However as you appear to be getting confused can i refer you back to the rest of the thread especially the bit mentioned by another poster that stated that bank transfers are extremely common in Europe and many sellers who sell outside the uK would be geared up to accept them.

I honestly do not believe that people living in Briitain are even less intelligent that out European cousins.

I'm not confused at all, my mind is totally made up and closed on this, NO ONE gets my bank details over the internet.full stop!
You are quite happy to give yours out, good for you, you go ahead and do that but don't tell people it is 100% safe when it isn't. In your very first post you said it was "exremely safe" then went on to give advice to the OP on what to look for if it was a scam. Hang on, its either safe or it isn't,its a scam or it isn't. I don't want to be having to look for scams I'm just not going to give them the chance. My bank details stay with me, my choice.

sorry Soo but i'm with JABDC5 on this, I can't see how I have anything to lose by not giving out my bank details and I can't see where I have something to gain by doing it. So rather than risk what you see as a miniscule chance of being scammed i'll stay safe and keep my details away from the internet.

  • The OP is trying to sell something! So there is a reason for him to give his bank detailsto the buyer so the buyer can pay money into his account. Simple.
There are a few business that would not be business if they didnt give you there bank details.
Would you give someone a paying in slip so they could pay money into your account?
I think you are not understanding that a person can not empty your back account by having your account number.

The only scam posisble is the same scam used on all payment methods, the fake email. If you are not able to check a bank account and ensure that payment shows, then I would also suggest not using paypal or even cheques as they all rely on the seller knowing how to tell a real payment from a fake email payment telling you 'send the item as payment is received and will clear on safe despatch'.

I believe this is the first thread where it is suggested that paypal is safer for the seller than a bank transfer, and I am usually the one being seen as an excessive advocate of paypal.
