I think you misunderstand. I'm not trying to stitch you up or ruin a sale of yours. I'm trying to reassure the OP, which is the purpose of this forum. One of us actually knows what we are talking about.

One of us thinks they know what they are talking about. And the other person has said she has sufficient doubt to prevent her giving her bank details to a complete stranger.

And one of us is aggressive and rude and not prepared to allow people to state an opinion that differs from theirs.

Yours is an opinion. Based on nothing. Mine is knowledge. Yet you insist on your right to state it. It doesn't help the OP. it confuses them and others.
You were the aggressive one, replying to a perfectly polite post with sarcasm. So you got it back.
I was an accountant for many years. The tosh spouted about identity theft sold lots of shredders. The other post about "remote cheques" is utter fiction.
Bank details are shared by billions of people every day. Every person working in your personnel, wages dept, or every filing clerk in the building can get them.

I've had several payments using international bank transfers, and money has always gone into my bank account (+amount saved in PayPal fees),rather than being taken out...
banks transfers are very commonly used in Europe and in Australia

I've not used cheques for years, not since internet scamming came along....well for a start I'd withdraw money via "demand draft" or "remotely created check" or transfer funds electronically. I'd request credit card and debit numbers and other personal information. I'd sign you up for "free trial offers." and put you on telemarketing phone lists, order goods delivered to a p.o. box or "drop address" and that's just a beginning, I know I don't need your bank details for some of this but I could still make your life unbearable. Even if I didn't manage to get any cash from you I'd cause severe disruption to your day to day life and finances, the banks would close your account and /or make you open a new one, it would be a severe hassle.....I'm not being nasty here but there are folks out there who do this, they make a living out of it.You seem to have an "it will never happen to me" attitude,I'm just saying you should be a bit more savvy, you give some really good advice out on this site but when talking about giving out bank account numbers you should be warning of possible problems not telling folks its totally safe.

Requesting money remotely...right, you have thankfully proved that you misunderstand the UK banking system.

I would also urge you to realise the difference between sort code and account number and bank card details (where you would also need the security info). All you can do with bank details is set up a DD, you do realise that they are easily cancelled and all monies repaid in event of fraud don;t you. You appear to mistake them for a continous payment authority, which is something entirely different and not possible with just sort code and bank account number.

You do also realise that you can't just claim money from an account, it works one way..go log into your bank and try getting money from any other account..you can't it has to be sent by the sending account, not claimed by a receiving account.

I've worked for 2 UK banks and I saw a lot of scams and I do worry about people keeping safe. However I think to stay safe we need to understand risks, and not misunderstand what is possible. If we understand what is possible and what is an urban myth then we are better placed to protect ourselves, rather than run around in a panic.

ell for a start I'd withdraw money via "demand draft" Eh? What's that or "remotely created check" Or That or transfer funds electronically You think my bank will accept a transfer of MY funds from you?. I'd request credit card and debit numbers Who will you request these from? and other personal information And who will this be from?. I'd sign you up for "free trial offers." - You can do that with a name and address - they get given out in Ebay sales anyway and put you on telemarketing phone lists You'd need a phone number - oftn given on Ebay sales too, order goods delivered to a p.o. box or "drop address" What are you going to order these with? A sort code and account number? and that's just a beginning, I know I don't need your bank details for some of this but I could still make your life unbearable.

You're being a bit silly. You've qoted a few things that could be done with a name and address (sign ups, send a pizza/taxi etc - old "pranks"), and a few things you can't do anyway.

Do you work in bank security by any chance?

Ah hang on, you said "Check" not "Cheque". That explains it.

getting back to the original question!!!!

I would not buy or sell anythink outside of ebay again. I have recently had a terrible experience and think although you may be out of pocket slighlty by listing a buy it now for the buyer, they could stlll pay you via bank transfer to save your paypal fees but then you will have ebays protection if something was to go wrong. IMO x x

guys I'm glad you quoted the original message, that was a very funny post, the guy has a sense of humour... :rotfl:
Why go through al that trouble when a lot of people are still more than happy to provide you with their bank log in details if sent an official looking email....

by selling outside ebay the buyer has no protection they cannot make any claim against the seller, so why would then need ebay protection? Only within ebay could the buyer make a SNAD, INR claim, and only if paying via PP/CC could they make a chargeback.
Your experience must have been different to what the OP is talking about.
