Just in the past 2 weeks, Nat Gas has gone up from around $4.30 to $4.80 yesterday (+12%) - I trade commodities, and I am anticipating that Nat Gas will go to $6 area within 3-6 months. So try and lock those fixed rates in sooner rather than later folks.

But why what is the underlying cause that hasn't been known to the industry for the last 5/10 years?

Demand has been building year on year. Why 37% in one year?

Are we not been driven by traders and brokers? (Not an attack on you personally just the beasts as a whole)

Don't forget that whilst you might fix/save for 12/18 months the price will have escalated again and the next jump you make will make your pips squeak at renewal

They would say that, wouldn't they? They're just trying to cling on to their customers. Fixed/capped price deals are going up, not down, in anticipation of the forthcoming round of price increases.

FOL8 has been a particularly good deal, but there's not the remotest chance of them coming up with anything anywhere near it pricewise - wholesale prices have moved way ahead since FOL8 prices were set.

Wait, by all means, but you could find by 1 July that prices are higher than now, not lower.

Thanks Doc N and others :T your comments are most helpful as we want to do the right thing particularly if commodities are expected to rise so much we're thinking the same thing, that if we wait rates may be higher.

    Looking at EnergyHelpline, looks like:

EDF Fixed Saver V2 (fixed to Sep 2012)
    and
EDF Fixed Price 2014 (fixed to March 2014)

are the best for our usage (3719kw elec per year and 9183kw gas per year)

Next question then if I want to switch rates tonight, do I do the switch immediately?
Presumably would need to switch and then enter meter readings online on Eon and request a bill in the next week or so.

EDIT > Ooooh spooky, I have a missed call from Eon... will update if and when they call back.

If you switch tonight I would have thought you would be OK as OLF* is due to expire on 1/7.

There is also a cooling off period from the new supplier so wouldn't expect mush to happen for next 10 working days.

To mitigate I would do a meter reading next week, submit on line and ask for a bill from the online menu. i would then do one weekly until you can't That said at this time of year usage is low so the cost/impact will be low. Only thing to be mindful of, if it did go through before the 1/7 (unlikely now), is the exit fee of £30.

Thanks Grizzly, we may do that, also getting £15 cashback via the energy cashback site I think.

If we go via this switching site they seem to be able to help with switching at the correct time depending on the time the old tariff finishes on. Would we tick that box or ignore it and just switch point blank based on it taking weeks to happen anyway...

OR do we see if we can get more cashback via a normal cashback site, for EDF dual fuel sign up.

Iam not sure how that switch delay works when I looked at doing it. Do they wait until 1/7 to kick it off, in which case you could be on high tariff for 6 weeks, or do they start it now with a delayed switch over. Either way I would expect your change to be after 1/7.

I haven't looked at cashback for EDF but I did for a couple of others and they didn't seem to apply to the more beneficial tariffs. Worth looking though.

I am sure one of the switching sites gives a double payment for dual fuel if you know which tariff to go for.

Just got my final bill from E.On, having switched to EDF as FOL7 ended.
I can confirm that the discount for the completed FOL7 was applied. Mind you, I did make sure EDF did not notify E.On until after the end of FOL7.
E.On didn't use the readings I entered online on May 1 when doing the final bill. Instead, they used estimated ones for May 2, which were slightly lower than the actual ones I entered. On the gas, they said I'd used 3065 kWh, where my reading gave 3633 kWh and was the day before their estimate. Overall, they appear to have overcharged me £6.27 as I was charged more on the EnergyOnline tariff for gas and electricity I actually used on FOL7. If it was a lot more, I'd get onto them about it, but it's not worth the hassle and phone calls, although I have to say I believe they'd sort it out.

If you are leaving and want to monitor what they do with your readings, do take something like screen prints of what you enter though. Once they start closing your account, you can't even see readings previously entered.

Final thought as I read this... Maybe I should pursue it on principle!

Grizzly I think they start after 1/7, so you don't get charged, I just wonder if we might lose the chance to get the fixed tariffs with EON that way, they might be pulled in the next 3 weeks...

Victor great work - did you transfer via phone then as you say you made sure they did not notify Eon until after end of FOL 7? Or can you enter notes online doing it via the cashback site?

I started with an online chat to EDF but they called me back after a problem so I did it by phone on 24/4. EDF told me I had a cooling off period of 12 days before they would contact E.On anyway, so that would take it into May.
So, I would guess even if you do it totally online within 12 days of the completion date with E.On, you should be fine. My actual transfer date for electricity was May 16 and gas 4 days later.

Presumably you could also enter readings and request a bill from E.On before you contact the new provider to avoid losing a lot of discount even if it goes through before the end of the agreement.

From a uSwitch email today warning of plans shortly to be withdrawn - don't leave it too late: :)

Thousands of energy customers need to compare energy prices in June or they could see an increase of up to £298 in their energy bills as cheap energy deals end.

    Ending this month:

E.ON’s ‘Track and Save Version 4’ – ends 7th June
    npower’s ‘Sign Online V18’ – ends 30th June
    EDF Energy’s ‘Online S@ver 6’ –ends 30th June
    EDF Energy’s ‘Annual Fix V3’ – ends 30th June

Customers who have just come off, or are about to come off a fixed or discounted plan, need to act now as suppliers are pulling their most competitive tariffs. Over the last 6 weeks, the price of a cheap energy deal has crept upwards by £60. However, British Gas’s ‘WebSaver 12’ is still priced at a market beating £955 a year.
