You can - all you need is a postcode (any postcode) in the gas/electricity supply area in which you live. Without that it's impossible to know which prices to use.

Doc N - have you decided to move to ScotsPower ?

I looked at that too. I can change today and am mystified.

Was with OVO but their gas prices have rocketed - had a good year of cheap prices and now back to reality!

However, fixing with SP will cost way more than standard price:
£1478 for Online energy saver 14 Dual
£1668 for the platinum fix jan2014 online v2

So do I stump up loads now or loads later???

Only paid £1200 for OVO - they were obviously trying to woo new customers with really low prices in the hope that 50% or so will stay even when prices rise.

Is it worth staying off a long-term fix in the hope that another company will do the same next year??

Comments on last point especially welcomed

The Scottish Power January 2014 deal's expensive in today's terms, but if you add, say, 15% to it to allow for the impending increase, and also take into account the free boiler service contract included, it doesn't look bad to me - given that you've got a very long fix. £40 cashback from uSwitch, too.

Do what I do, make them up or put in the details of my local hydro electric office. As long as you have a valid postcode for the area you live in it works.

I too will be looking for another provider/s shortly when my FOL8 comes to an end.
Eon have been a fab provider for 3 years and their website is great, but at the end of the day cash is king.

Malc - A bit of confusion with a lot of people asking when to cancel their contract and final bills etc.

Could you tell us if this is the right scenario with my example as not to lose final discounts?

    FOL8 Contract ends -- 1 July 2011
    Last Bill -- 4 May
Expected next bill -- 16 Aug

5 June -- Apply to new provider (approx 4 weeks b4 contract ends)
1 July -- Contact Eon with readings + ask for new bill ( after contract ends)

After 1 July - Pay bill (with discounts)

Aprox 5 July- 19 July -- Switchover completes + final bill is provided for last 2 weeks (without discount)

    Hope this will help others

In my experience you might be a bit premature with your new provider application.
I was on FOL7 which ended 30/4. On 21/4 I applied to EDF and told them I didn't want E.On to be contacted about me leaving until after the end of April. They informed me I had a 12 day cooling off period so they wouldn't do anything until May 3.
My last bill was in March so I wasn't due another until June. I have been reassured on here and directly from E.On that I will get the discount on FOL7 as I completed it, so no worries there.
I tried to request a bill from E.On a week before the transfer (which should have happened yesterday), but was told it was not possible as my account was being closed and the next bill would be the final closing one. The discount lost on E.On's standard tariff is no big deal, I just thought I'd try out of curiosity.
So, my experience suggests that you let FOL8 run to completion. Start the transfer just before it ends, but not so much so that E.On flag your account as closing too soon. It may take 4-6 weeks, but the new provider will contact the old one well before that date.

Quite a lot of us in here are on the rather well-priced e.on Fixonline 8 tariff which finishes on 1 July.

There's no way I'll be staying with e.on on any of the tariffs they're presently offering us, so I'm starting actively to look around to switch - and with the cashbacks on offer for switching to another company e.on are going to lose a lot of customers. The cashback will more than cover any cancellation fee.

The question for the e.on company representative is whether they're aware of the number of customers they're likely to lose, whether that bothers them, and whether they're going to come up with a decent fixed/capped rate that's going to attract us to stay.

Just had an EMail from EON in answer to a question on current tariffs. They told me to check their website near to 1st July as there maybe a better tariff available.
Is this a ploy to stop defectors ? I for one will start the switching process in mid June (2 weeks before tariff ends)

My guess is yes, and as competitors' tariffs are already increasing almost daily it's probably best to switch now. The possible (but avoidable) penalty is outweighed by the likely tariff increases between now and mid June.

    Answer - yes.

As DOCN says if you are after a fixed deal then it may be inyour interests to get moving now if you accept the talking up of the tariffs -as most people do. At least you will know the agrreed price per unit for the term of the contract.

If you do fix, bear in mind that the underlying tariffs will rise during the term of the fixed contract and you may have a bigger jump when you next come to look around again.

If you are planning on going variable I am not so sure as all the online tariffs offer a discount against the providers standard rates which will rise anyway sooner or later. Then any cost benefit will depend on timing.

Yesterday I arranged a switch to EDF fixed rate until 30 Sep 2012.

Depending on how fast/slow they make the switch, the switch may happen just before 1 July (£30 penalty) or just after 1 July (no penalty).

I went via Quidco onto moneysupermarket website, which will give a £20 cashback.

So even if I get hit with the £30 penalty - I will only be down by £10 - and I would rather know that I got the EDF fixed rate which could disappear overnight.

However if it is actioned before 1 July you lose the discount on your final bill - 26.6% in my case!!
