Well it was good while it lasted as others have mentioned. I think the maintainers of the spreadsheet deserve a warm congratulations too.

I hardly think a company that was selling toothpaste at £2.48 a tube at the same time as Asda were selling it for £1 can accuse anybody of profiteering.

I have two £20 vouchers at the moment waiting for me to use. If they refuse to accept these then I will probably go mental.

I have just had Tesco delivered (didn't hear about the news until 20minutes ago! Tried to give my voucher to the driver who wouldn't accept it and said I had to call Customer Service... I did and he simply credited me back. Simples. :j
Reckopn they must still honour the vouchers we already have, nbut think they may only give a few days for this..

If you 'don't know about ASDA' how can you know that "in some cases Tesco were twice the price of Asda on some products"?

mysupermarket.co.uk - I was looking to see if I could use DTD to get some wine in last weekend on the cheap when I had guests staying ;)
What we need in this country is more supermarkets and more competition, so that people have a choice, and retailers are obliged to compete for business.

I'm of totally the opposite opinion. I champion the independent retailer and believe the big supermarkets should get fewer planning apps through. They've ruined high streets up and down the country...and high streets are the heart of a community.
You can still go to your local Tesco even now and buy your Nobilo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, and Tesco will effectively sell it

True, though more often than not I just buy cases of wine from online merchants or direct from English producers.

And *I* find it laughable that you think Tesco are "profiteering" from their customers. One look at their shareholder statement shows you that their margins in the UK food business are absolutely razor-thin. After staff and overheads they only make around 5-6% profit from their food business, which is proportionately less than the rest of the Big Four, and a lot less than smaller convenience stores or independent shops, get your facts right.

And yet their margins are higher than the supermarkets from mainland Europe. I don't mind small independent stores having higher margins frankly...they provide a better product all round and are better for local communities and local producers. I'd rather give my money to the local butcher who is providing free-range meat from herds raised 2 miles away than I would give less money to Tescos for their poor quality, badly hung and highly transported meat. The only time I buy meat from Tescos is when it's on the reduced shelf and then I feed it to my dog.

Wine is one of their loss leaders, ever wonder why they put it right at the back of the store, so you have to walk past everything else to get to it?

Not sure I agree with you on that one - the bottles you frequently see at half price are artificially inflated in the first place and are generally not good bottles of wine.

I'm sorry, but Asda is full of council scum, and my local grocers and corner shops are way more expensive than Tesco, only open till 6pm and not great quality either, so I'll stick with the big T thanks :)

The quality of Tesco meat, fruit and veg is absolute and total crap that's really only fit for the compost bin. I'd also add that, at least when it comes to veg, I can get an organic box delivered to my door once a week from the Highgrove farm and it's cheaper than buying the equivalent from Tesco. In fact the local bakery, who use only stoneground flour from a watermill just outside town, sell a bog standard loaf for nearly the same price as one of Tesco's bakery loaves.

As you can tell, I'm a bit of a Tesco's hater...not just for their produce but for the way they treat the producers.

  • I am disappointed that this price match from Tesco did not mean them reducing their prices where appropriate. We have no chance to shop at Asda unless we shop online and hoped we would get Asda prices at Tesco.

Today we were shocked by how many prices have gone up again at Tesco. Also cabbages were so small they would not feed the 2 of us for one meal. I am certainly motivated to get the veg growing more in our garden.

    In their own words...
    https://www.tescopricecheck.com/PriceCheck/Pages/TermsUpdate.aspx?redirectTo=InStore
We created Price Check to provide real transparency for our customers and to reassure them in the face of misleading claims by Asda.

When we compare our customers' baskets with Asda's prices, nearly 80 per cent are the same price or cheaper in Tesco than they would be in Asda.

Deconstructing that quote for a minute... They say Asda was misleading Tesco customers? Then they (Tesco themselves) say that more than 1 in 5 baskets are more expensive than they would be at Asda.

More than 1 in 5 baskets is quite a high chance of paying more than we need to Mr T!! But like several here, there is limited choice of supermarkets around me :(

No wonder you had to scrap it Mr T. A bit cheeky to do it the day before the big wedding. The cynic in me says you're hoping to bury bad news in the papers tomorrow under the weight of other events.

Tesco celebrate wedding by saying "I don't".
Single the difference now, but double the embarrassment.

    Tesco, Tesco, Tesco.

You are a snidey, slimey, scummy beast of a company!

Offer cheaper prices than Asda before you blame the people who have been filling your stores for the last 2 months. Its gonna be a little bit quieter in Tesco stores this week.

I dont want a relationship with my supermarket, just some cheap food, served with a smile. Asda and Sainsburys offer both, Tesco just makes most of its checkout 'girls' wear halloween masks before they sit down at their till. Trout is a very appropriate word for the majority of your staff. I'm going to change the description of this on wikipedia from the fish to 'a Tesco worker.' I include anyone who works for Tesco who doesnt care about their customers in this statement.

Tesco doesnt sell plums cos they're wearing the uniforms.

    Ta-ra chumps.

r you could go and buy it from Netto for £4.49 :D

Exactly. The European supermarkets operate on a lower margin than the big UK ones. There is no difference in the food quality, in fact a lot of it comes from the same manufacturers.

My Father has been in the food industry for 40 years at a senior level brokering deals between European producers and UK supermarkets so not only has he been first hand witness to the antics some of them pull when screwing producers to the floor, he also knows for a cast-iron FACT that much of the food comes from the exact same origins as that you find in Mr Ts (or Asda or Sainsburys for that matter).

How very true. I am sorry to say this but some of the posts here looked a bit like fraud.
