I find it laughable that Tesco is 'blaming shoppers' for this change in their price difference guarantee. Tesco are blatantly and excessively profiteering from those very shoppers they are blaming and the only reason those shoppers were able to get big voucher refunds was because in some cases Tesco were twice the price of Asda on some products! I'd also add that even if they were paying out £100 a month in vouchers to some shoppers, that doesn't equate to them losing £100 a month as those vouchers are were only good to spend in Tesco and getting a customer back in through the door inevitably means they'll buy things which aren't cheaper at Asda too.

As for me, well I'm happy that the last bank holiday weekend the DTD price guarantee enabled me to get some Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc at a reasonable price (because it's not worth the near £9 Tesco normally charge for it!) and a pack of dishwasher tables which they had the temerity to charge over twice the price as Asda were doing.

Why don't Tesco simply match the prices from Asda on their shelves in the first place? Well the cynic in me says that it's because Tesco's long-held policy of aggressive land acquisition and store opening has resulted in many areas not having a lot of choice other than Tesco. In my case, we have a Tesco in the town and the next nearest supermarket, a Waitrose, is 10 miles away. It's a captive audience they can cynically screw to the floor with excessive pricing.

I'm glad I only use Tesco for wine and household products - personally I give my money for food to local producers who actually give a crap about the quality of what they're selling and their customers being happy.

And in some cases ASDA are twice the price of Tesco on some products - as in Häagen-Dazs icecream £4.15 in ASDA, £2.07 in Tesco, or Young's Cod Steaks £3.98 in ASDA, £2.00 in Tesco. It's only because Tesco were offering DTD that focussed people's attention on those products where ASDA were significantly cheaper whilst ignoring those where the reverse was the case.

Back to Morrisons and Sainsburys for me then!

    Zippy x

Don't you mean back to ASDA where you can buy whatever's on special offer somehwere else with an extra 10% off?
  • I find it ironic that The Rich can get away with tax evasion and rhetoric spouting wonders of Public Service Cuts and yet the canny Shopper is made to pay for his canniness. Any way to punish the likes of Tesco?

The only reason I shop at tesco is cause hubby works there and gets staff discounts + other benefits throughout the year otherwise I wouldn't bother. I worked for them when I was 16 they are a nasty bullying company who only think about the money they make.

I wouldn't know about Asda - there's not one anywhere near here. However the general principle is that if supermarkets want to trumpet that they are the cheapest and start price guarantees then it's a pretty good idea to make sure they actually are the cheapest. Tesco could easily have used the data from the DTD to lower the prices of those items they were paying out on. They didn't. Why? Because many more customers would have been buying them at full price than those who were making use of the DTD guarantee. They didn't lower because it was more profitable for them not to do so; the 'ooo poor us, nasty savvy customers have been exploiting us' line is simply baseless PR guff to shift the blame for them downgrading a customer loyalty benefit.

I'm afraid I have scant regard for any of the big supermarket chains - they're simply community and small business killers.
