We bought a game in Tesco yesterday, as we were walking to the till I was telling my husband about the double the difference policy and that if a price is ever wrong, to query it after you've paid for it. So, he pays for this game and it scans through at £40 instead of £25, thank god I had just told him that or he would've said something! We paid, then took our receipt to customer service and got £30 :D

    Good for you !!!

When Aldi first opened years ago they had the most stupid system ever, the cashiers had to memorise every item in the shop and input the price,no scanning at all,on your reciept all you got was a long list of prices no item description at all,i stopped shopping with them until this stupid practise ended.

LOL, I remember that.....you just know a new kid on the block would panic with a long queue!! It makes you wonder how they got away with it. :p

A young checkout operator recently scanned my wine then asked for confirmation he could sell it to me from a colleague and then promptly scanned the wine again - I had heard the till beep twice so when the total was displayed, I asked him to check (as the bill seemed more than I had been expecting) and I had indeed been charged twice so he took one off. That was £5 odd. I didn't know that if they overcharge you and you go back afterwards that you get double the difference:o

I was lucky in Mr T once though - I used a couple of my Clubc%rd vouchers but one didn't get scanned and promptly got put in the till - on checking my receipt (before I left the store) - I noticed this so went back and asked them to fish it out of the till for me. It was the more expensive voucher £5 odd I was very relieved to get it back.

At the rate checkout staff scan items, I find it near on impossible to keep track of the prices so I do take a moment before leaving the store to check all is in order with my receipt and I really dislike it that my local Sain5bug% offer you the option of whether you want a receipt or not? It might save paper but how much is this making them? Because I don't see you would have any comeback if you don't have your receipt and you had been overcharged.

I think my biggest pet hate is checkout staff who scan an item x 3 but then scan one of the items again so you get charged for 4 when you only bought 3. I tend to have my shopping delivered and do find that when I visit a large store or do a big shop it almost makes me feel ill with the stress of it all.

I always notice the difference between the experience of actually shopping - where you can take your time (to an extent - depending upon how busy the shop is) and the rate at which they "throw" customers through the checkout - as though they can't get us out fast enough. I also find the latter very stressful and it's no wonder people can't keep track of what they're paying.

I could be cynical and suggest it's deliberate ? At the very least it's highly disrespectful.

Sainsbury's have now disabled the quantity buttons on the checkouts to try and prevent this. Each item has to be scanned individually.

At Morrisons Ive had a chicken put through twice at a 6ukp over, and a grapefruit put through 12 times, 2 different instances.

I always check the receipt, whichever shop it is. I've been overcharged in them all at one time or another.

Most recent was Aldi - pack of 5 lemons for £1 got charged at £3 odd. Returned to the checkout operator who took one look and told me the item number was last used for strawberries and had obviously not been changed yet! I ask you? - What type of excuse is that?

Refunded difference for me - but what about all those customers who aren't as vigilant?

    Easy profits.

Best savings through checking receipts? Probably a free CD from Tesco price-marked £5 charged £9 odd, so got the money back and the item free.

I've noticed a couple of instances of M&S overcharging but not until I had got back to parents house, not practical to go back.
Mum shopped there years and years and never checked so I'm sure they made a few pounds from her.

Somehow you just don't expect from M&S although just as feasible as any other grocery store.

Not just grocery stores but fast food outlets too, subways, Macdonalds. Got overcharged in McD as assistant had charged for items that were free with Monopoly vouchers, DH would not have noticed. Late that same day an overprice in Morrissons.

However although I know these errors happen I don't always remember to check.

Sorry if this has been covered here already, and checking till receipts every single time you shop is a pain, I know, but it's well worth it - I've found three errors in six months (erring on the side of the supermarket - no surprise there!) just by adding everything up and checking 'two-fers' etc. On one occasion it was for over a fiver - so do check.
