How much have you saved by checking receipts?

  • I little warning for those who are taking up the offer of 3 for 2 dulux paint at B & Q.. I purchased 9 tins of paint 3 @ £29.00 3 @ 15.00 and 3 @ 10.95 when i checked my receipt they gave me the cheapest tins free. So i saved £32.85..

However, if I had bought the paint in 3 different transactions i would have saved £54.95 (would have got one paint free).

I went back to the store and complained saying it does not pay to buy in bulk where is your customer loyality etc and after a fashion they agreed and they credited my account with the difference of £22.11.

Tesco charged me £10 for a bottle of milk which had scanned as a bottle of white rum (I don't drink). When I returned to the store customer services were adamant that such a mistake couldn't happen. I think it may have had something to do with condensation on the bar-code. I had to take it up with Tesco head office before I got a refund. Now I ALWAYS check my receipts.

I check mine every week and at least once a month there is something wrong, so I get a £2.00 card top up each time. Also I compare the prices online and in March got a voucher every single week. Ranging from 30p to £5.37, so it pays to check before you leave the store and compare each week on their website.

Was over charged 84p on loaf of bread today from Tesco.
Didn't notice until I got home.
Took it back to a closer store than the one it was bought from, they said they couldn't give me DTD as it was from a different store. So just got the 84p back.
    Anybody else heard of this?

My favourite mistake was back in the days when Tesco refunded all the price error and let you keep the product (about 15 years ago). I bought some clothing. A dress had been reduced from £15 to £12, but it went through the till as £15. I pointed it out, so got the £15 back and got to keep the dress for free. I still always check my receipts as I was taught to by my mum - drives my fiance mad! I agree it's not so worth complaining now when you only get the difference back. Or even the DTD.

Quite often get snooty staff when you complain about mischarging. 3 tins of beans for £1, yet I got charged almost £1.50 along with bacon marked at £1.21 charge £1.40 ish. I complained to staff, who called manager, who refunded one of the beans. When I pointed out the bacon error, she refused to make an additional refund. Left a bitter taste in my mouth, so I filled in their "tell us about your shopping experience" online. I got a very prompt call from customer services who was very apologetic who said if I went back to the shop that day I would get my money back. But as I live a fair distance away, I chose not to go back for the 20p ish - as it would definitely have cost more than my refund would have been.
  • Thanks to everyone who replied to my original question - was really surprised to see that this thread is still running. Am amazed at how many of us have had this experience - time and time again.

I went into Tesco today and, after I'd checked my receipt (not errors today) I stood there for 5 minutes and just watched to see how many people checked their receipts - didn't see ANYONE do it; not a single person.

Just HOW MUCH MONEY are they all making out of all those errors????

Come on Martin Lewis - there MUST BE an investigation to be done on this ... !

I was doing a weekly shop in Tesco and as it was school hols my kids were asking for loads of extras, as they were all BOGoF or 3 for 2 I let them go a bit mad.

When I'd got through the till I checked my receipt as usual and not one offer had been taken off.

I went to customer services (and there was a huge queue), when I got to the front I didn't even open my mouth before the assistant said and how much do we owe you.

Apparently there was a computer problem on offers which they were aware of but thought it was better to keep the store open.

As they offer double the difference they must have lost a fortune that day.

In addition to my previous posting I always go to customer services even if the error is 2p, as it is my money they are stealing, they'd certainly reprimand me if it was the other way round.

They are a big corporation who should know better.

I always give the coin difference to my children in front os the assistant who tuts for me complaining over 2p, and say there we go that's the money Tesco were trying to steal from you. Ha, stops the tuts from the staff.

When Aldi first opened years ago they had the most stupid system ever, the cashiers had to memorise every item in the shop and input the price,no scanning at all,on your reciept all you got was a long list of prices no item description at all,i stopped shopping with them until this stupid practise ended.

My bf works with Aldi and has to memorise a massive list of products. They don't *have* to learn them but to hit the target number of items through the till in an hour, they have to memorise them as they'd be too slow without knowing them. It's so stupid. Quantity over quality.

I always go into Ikea and never intend to spend as much as I do. However, this one time I bought three metres of material at about 5 euros per metre. The bill came to over 150 euros! They had added a nought where they didn't ought! Yes, too damn right I held up the queue until they put it right. So sorry to anyone who was behind me that day. Ikea queues are long enough......
