Usually, it will take up to 3 weeks to get it all processed. I've read in the bankruptcy board that people can have the account opened in branch.

I've heard that they have a backlog at the moment.

Call this number to chase them up: 0500 007 234, or go into branch and query about it.

I am a discharged bankrupt nearly 5 years! Does anyone know if they would open a basic account for me? The only thing more then 5 years ago Barclays were included in the bankruptcy!

Do they just do an electoral roll check and fraud check? Any info please

If you open the Barclays cashcard in a branch they open it their and then
When did you open your account with them? Just wondering if they've changed their opening account procedures for this basic account - seems strange that some people cant open it in branch and have to post off an application instead. Goes without saying it'd much simpler to open it in the branch.

Actually ignore my last post. Just spoke to Barclays on 0500 007 234 which is the new account opening helpline. Cash Card accounts CANNOT definately be opened at branch i've been advised only by post. She explained this is because they do not perform credit checks for this account but only security checks (ie voters roll and checking the fraud database) so the branch staff are unable to see this information hence why only postal applications.

She did say there was an exceptional demand for this account at the moment and that applications were taking on average 2-3 weeks to process.

Yes, only those checks are done.

    Hi all,

Just registered on here for a little advice.

I have 2 ccj's and 5 defaults, I have had my wages paid into my parents bank account for a while now but want to get my own bank account. Tried to open one with Lloyds today but I was refused, I did tell the woman who was dealing with it that I only wanted a basic account but she decided to apply for a Classic account, maybe that is why I was outright refused??

Are the best options barclays, co-op and natwest??

    Thanks.

Yes, those are the best options. Clydesdale and Yorkshire bank are good too.

Don't try LTSB for their basic bank account, as their debit card can only work at their cash machines only.

I'm sure you have your own bank account, since you have CCJs and defaults. Why can't you use your own bank account?

Long story but had a really bad car crash a couple of years ago and went into a spiral of depression etc including not bothering with anything money wise, hence the ccj's etc. My bank closed my account so I don't have one.

    First time on..

Just been declined for a lloyds basic account, they told me that they now credit score for this account ? can anyone confirm this...
I did confirm a few times to the girl on the phone all I want is a basic account, and NOT a current account !

I have a few bit's on my credit file which are being paid off, but now worried I will be declined with other banks.

    Ta

Update -- I recieved a letter in the post from Lloyds to say they are sorry they were unable to provide me with a current account but I have been accepted for a cash account .... this is all I wanted anyway, I told this to the lady on the phone!!!!!!. I went into my local branch yesterday with the letter and it's all open I have my account number and will get my card in a few day's.
The lady in branch also confirmed they open a savings account that comes with a cash card and you can use this cash card in ANY cash point machine no matter what bank. So I will be keeping some funds in that for when I am unable to get to a Lloyds cash point. I did also ask why the cash account Visa card was restricted to only Lloyds cash points ! she could not confirm why.

Thank god for that I did panic when I was told I had been declined for a basic account with Lloyds!.

Good luck if you are also looking for a basic account. :j
  • With the Co-op you can use your local PO.

We've now got a Yorkshire Bank basic account with a Maestro debit card and a Co-op Bank basic account with an Electron debit card.

We opened our Co-op account over the phone in about 5 mins.

Did Co-op ask you for details of your income or want you to prove your income?

I tried to open a basic account with Yorkshire Bank/Clydesdale but they want proof of income, which is difficult for me because my income is all from casual work below the tax threshold. I can't see why they need proof of income for such an account but they do.

No details of our income were asked for by the Co-op or the Yorkshire. Just replied to your PM. :)
    Numpties...I'm surrounded by them...save me...
