It wouldn't affect your credit rating, it could actually improve it, if you run it probably.
  • Thanks sutton, will apply and see what happens.

  • Hi all, been having a read through some of the posts in here and some questiions for you all.
My credit rating is pretty poor and Im looking to open a basic account. I am currently banking with the natwest but would now rather deal with just cash in my pocket than have to deal with there incompitance again! latest issue is a loan going to arreers after they failed to set up the direct debit to actually take the loan payments they had organised with the explanation of 'not sure what happened there sir!'
So this leads me on, I want a bank with a local branch i can visit but with a basic account to pay my wages to and have dd's go from. also a card is essential to make payments with.
Who is best for this from your experiance? I have been recomended the co-op but there nearest branch is nearly 20miles away.
Wont mind too much about the branch if there internet and telephone facilities are up to scratch.
    Just advice please guys

Barclay's Cash Account - a basic account with online access and a Visa Debit card
  • I used to use a company called thinkbanking - they do charge £12.50 a month - but helped to sort me out.

They give you 2 accounts -

The first - You salary goes into and all d/d are taken from it.

The leftover money is then moved to the second which is your card account and your spending money.

You get a switch/maestro card, online and telephone banking - which costs a lot to call!

It was good for me at the time as I never knew if my d/d had been paid - they hold it to one side so you know it's sorted.

Now I am swapping to a free basic account with halifax...
Not really comping any more as too ill - but hoping to win £1000+ in 2017 in cash prizes - watch this space!

I would advise you to switch your Halifax basic account with another bank. They provide limited branch service, and the card is Electron (which looks ugly). :p

Natwest/RBS, Co-op, and Barclays are good for basic accounts.

You can get a basic account. If you're unemployed you could have your JSA paid into it, pay DD and SO you also get a debit card with most.

Go here for a list of basic accounts and the services you get with different accounts.

IMHO I would recommend either Barclays or Lloydstsb as they issue Visa debit cards on their basic accounts.
