I have about 6-7 defaults and 2 ccjs and thought anyone could have a basic account. Tried Barclays and LLoyds and was declined! Just to let people know.

And i don't have any fraud on my credit files.

I thought you did have markers?

Did Lloyds give you a reason why they couldn't open the cash account for you?

I thought it may of been CIFAS marker's but it looks like David has got rid of them. Back in November he still had them.
  • Hi,

I am moving everything to a basic account, as soon to be in an IVA and been advised I should close all 'normal' accounts. So I recently opened a co-op cashminder, which seems OK.

Big issue though is no cheque book. I don't understand why this seems to be treated as a form of credit, because as long as they don't give you a guarantee card, it cannot take you overdrawn!

Anyway, I see mention from other people about cheque books from Citi and Norwich and Peterbourgh BS, but these are not basic account, they are account with overdraft facilities so not good for bankrupts, etc.

Anyone know of any truly basic (ie: no overdraft ever) account, acceptable to bankrupts, that also has a chequebook facility?

If not, are there any prepaid cards that come with chequebooks (which take money from the card account)?

Or any other way to have a cheque book?

    Thanks,
    Martin

    None I'm sorry.
  • First time on..

Just been declined for a lloyds basic account, they told me that they now credit score for this account ? can anyone confirm this...
I did confirm a few times to the girl on the phone all I want is a basic account, and NOT a current account !

I have a few bit's on my credit file which are being paid off, but now worried I will be declined with other banks.

  • My DH opened a Co-op basic bank account over the phone last Saturday night and received a Visa Electron card yesterday. It took less than 5 minutes and they did do a credit check but he passed. He does have defaults but no CCJs.
    Numpties...I'm surrounded by them...save me...

Didn't know LTSB credit score for their basic accounts. Most banks don't do this (they do ID/address and credit 'check' not 'score'). Call again that you want a 'Cash Account' (name of LTSB basic account). Imagine if banks credit score on basic accounts, and people fail them, and no one can get a bank account, lol.

Anyway, just apply for another basic account at another bank. LTSB basic account is crap anyway, as it could only be used at their cash machines only. See a list of basic accounts here: http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/pdfs/bank_accounts.pdf

I personally recommend RBS/Natwest, Co-op, and Barclays. I would avoid HBOS due to limited branch service.

I'd try the Yorkshire Bank as my first choice as they don't do a credit check, just an ID check and you get a Maestro debit card rather than one of the less commonly accepted ones like a Visa Electron.

  • Llloyds TSB will credit score you for current account and if that is refused they will offer a basic account.
