Not really, but it would be nice to have either one account or the other!

I started the application online, took my docs to local branch. They sent me a cheque book - but forgot the bank card. Called them up - logged a complaint (they said to do this, not me!) and then got my card delivered.

I feel like something went wrong somewhere!!

I don't understand? Start a thread on here?
  • I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I'll give it a go.

I'm 18, and I have a savings account with nationwide and a childrens current account with Natwest. A couple of years ago nationwide wrote to me and asked me if i would like to open their current account, the flexaccount, and I would receive a cash card as I was under 18 and could therefore not get the Visa debit card. I decided to open this account with them.

A couple of weeks ago I went into Nationwide and asked if now i was 18 whether it would be possible to upgrade to the Visa card as I really do need one now. I have a full time job and had decided to have my wages paid into the flexaccount in order to be eligible for the upgraded account. I filled in the form to upgrade the account and got told that i would hear back in a week. A couple of days ago, over 2 weeks since i went into the branch I got a letter back saying that my credit score was not high enough to allow them to give me the card.

    I dont understand!!!
I don't have any loans or owe anyone anything so how can I have a low credit score?
I'm worried will I never be able to get a Visa card now?
My wages are now being paid into that account so if I have to try and change bank/building society then I'm going to have to go through the stress of changing where my wages are paid!

I just really dont know what to do!
Please can anyone help me!

Hi etak, try Halifax Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Lloyds TSB or Alliance and Leicester as they issue Visa Debit Crads with their basic accounts, also try and get a credit card to help build your credit rating, Capital One, MBNA, Monument and Vanquis are an ideal starting point.

Thanks for the tips on citibank, it sounds pretty good, and I've just applied for their account.

I noticed someone mentioned that Lloyds TSB can be used for deposites for citibank (cheques and such). However, I was wondering a bit about this.

What exactly is the relationship between the two banks? What agreement do they have in place. And what other facilities of the TSB can we use as citibank customers?
  • Etak.

I shouldn't be concerned. Nationwide have notoriously high requirements for issuing thier debit card. Many with good credit ratings have been declined as has been regularly commented on here.

You simply have to find a more co-operative bank, and there are many of them. Foe a basic bank account (which might be, though not necessarily, a place to start) I tend to recommend Yorkshire/Clydesdales Readycash account.

Furthermore. Changing the bank details with you employer is a simple matter, and not one that should concern you in the least.

I do not concur with the other poster that a credit card is necessarily the best way forward for you.

    Best of luck.

Why? How do you propose the OP builds any form of credit rating? A credit card is a very useful financial tool, more so when you are just starting out. ;)

Just to let people know I opened a Readycash account with Yorkshire bank today and there were really nice.
I've just started a debt management plan and told them this and they were more than understanding. There is no credit check with the basic ready cash account, however they do a bankrupcy check which was fine with me as I havent been declared bankrupt.
Another good thing was that even though I had to go into the branch to open the account, they opened it and gave me my account code and sort number within an hour of me setting foot in the place. (None of this photocopying and posting lark).

My Maestro debit card should be with me within 5 days - I'm over the moon.
