    >> opening a bank account without proof of address.

There are prepaid cards that allow wagers paid in, but you'll need some address to apply for it and receive it. They are unlikely to ask for the proofs.

  • Thank you for the reply .I have got a prepaid card but still need proof of address to use it for bank transfers of wages.

Why do you need the proof and who asks for it?

    Hey,
I have no bank account and desperately need one :( I'm trying to pay off some debt but it's very difficult when your money is kept in your knicker draw or your dads bank account!!
I tried opening a basic Barclays account, and the guy said lets try a current account. As they helpfully seem to do... Anyway, I passed the credit check and was over the moon, then a few days later I got a letter saying they had to take the account off me and I could never open anything with them ever again :(
    Worth chasing up?
So I went for a coop cash minder and got turned down, then they sent me a letter asking if I was still interested in any of their products, worth pursuing?
Then I went for a Natwest step account and got turned down :(
Is all this getting turned down going to effect my credit badly?
I have 3 defaults to my name. Doesn't seem too bad... And I've got £600 saved up to pay them back with if I could only open a bank account!!
    Any help would be amazing.
    Thank you
    :)

Only you know the possible reasons. You have not even explained how you managed to rack up debts without ever having even a current account. If there are no any serious reasons for Barclays being so harsh, it's definitely worth chasing at least to try finding out the main reason/problem. Have your ever seen your credit files?

It will, but not for a long term: Credit Ratings

It does to me, especially if the defaulted accounts is the only information in your credit files.

You can pay from your friend's or relative's account, but even if you pay off all debts the only change will be in the status (to 'settled'); the defaults will remain in the files for 6 years.
  • I had 2 current accounts, which I defaulted on, which is my debt.

Should I keep trying to apply for basic accounts?

Or get an instant savings that I can at least get wages paid into...?

I will give Barclays a phone..

    Thank you :)

Defaulting on bank accounts most probably look worse especially if the bank you're wanting to join see you've screwed over the last two bank accounts you had.

If Bareclays have told you never to darken their doors again, I suspect that either they are one of the banks to whom you owe money or you possibly have a CIFAS marker, perhaps related to the manner in which you defaulted?

Bit of advice needed. I am needing to open up a basic bank account because of the new ruling regarding housing benefit being paid direct. I have C.C.J's and unresolved debts against me due to the financial situation I was left in by my ex partner. Can anyone recommend a bank account I would be likely to get ?, I have debts outstanding with Natwest so am unable to get an account with them, and as I have been sleeping on my brothers sofa for the last 2 years I don't have any domestic bills as proof of I.D or address. Thanks

Barclays, Nationwide, Co-op and Yorkshire/Clydesdale all offer basic accounts with full ATM access/debit card.

Make sure you don't apply to any banking group that you owe money to e.g. RBS group.

Other possible options are a Post Office Card Account or savings account with a cashcard.
