Looking for some advice please i am due to go on a DRO and have been adviced to close both my natwest and Halifax accounts and open a new one that isnt linked to either of these banks. i currently have Direct debits set up with Royal bank of Scotland but have heard they are linked to natwest.

RBS own NatWest you may want to consider opening a basic account with the co op or barclays.

Do any banks take their identification from the EL online? I'm asking because I tried to open a basic account at Natwest in branch and they couldn't open my account with my passport, provisional drivers license (said it was too old), and birth certificate. It got confused because of the first two been of my parents address, the ER been my parents address and me telling them I'll be moving back there in days.

Got myself into a bit of trouble nearly up to £9 grand, I always thought I'd be able to straighten it out moving back home, as well as working but then I had some issues / got dumb with credit I had and lost my job. Therefore, I need an account to manage this mess before things get worse.

Thank you for any help or advice.

Has your passport expired? otherwise it should be ok.

You could open the account online.

If your prepared to pay £10.00 a month to get the use of all ATMs you could apply for a select silver account.

They said the problem was my provisional driving license. It hasn't expired but was older than 5 or 7 years (can't remember which) and since it's my parents address I'm now living at, I had no utility bills for the address. I opened an account with the co-op though. Thanks for your help!

I've been using HSBC for both business and Current. However have been hearing great things about Halifax, anyone confirm or deny this?
  • Hi what is the best basic account (no minimum payment into account) to use if I am going to be paying in small amounts of money and taking it out, I will want to have a debit card and also online access.

look at the list of basic bank accounts. Then take your pick. There is no one best account.
  • Hi,

I'm new to this so please bear with me...
I have a Santander current account that charges me £20 a month for my overdraft. This year I'm determined to sort that, so do I switch to First Direct (0% for a £250 overdraft for life of the account) or Halifax 0% for overdraft for a year? Currently I'm about £650 OD a month. I have £400 on a 0% credit card, that's my only other debt (apart from mortgage). Please can anyone advise what would be the best route to take, I'm confused about what's the best way to sort this. Many thanks.
  • This is very helpful information. I found answers to my own questions. Big thanks!
