What account can you open if you have just moved? I moved in October and obviously don't appear on the electoral roll as yet - I tried to open one with NatWest and had the same problem as another poster - ie opened and then closed due to referral system. Any ideas would be welcome
thanks

Hi, my son has what we believe to be a basic bank account with HSBC. He is going overdrawn each month by up to £95. I thought they did not allow you to go overdrawn? Charges this month are a stagering £93 with interest at £0.70.
Is this normal and is there a bank account that will take his wages and not allow him to go overdrawn please?
I would prefer one without an overdraft limit as he sees this as a target!

i opened a Basic Bank account with HSBC October last year.i had my Working Tax Credit paid into it each week. I recently insured my car with HSBC paying monthly.the insurance Co applied the Direct Debit some days early with the result that it bouinced. They re applied and in total the DD bounced 3 times.I get paid my WTC every Wednesday.Yesterday (Tuesday) my card was swallowed by the ATM. I visited a branch and was told tha tthe account was cancelled cause of the bounced DD's and that they would be sending back my WTC. Result total disaster. No warning.Nothing. Thank you HSBC. Did ring them up and spoke to a very nice Indian lady.Apparently nothing anyone at HSBC could do. Strangely over the last 9 weeks, my account had been fraudulently debited from Morrisons some 300 miles up the road.Agreed I got a refund but how safe is HSBC one has to ask. Got exactly the same service from HSBC on my Co account i.e.,"got to the end of the month to sort out" and wallop, they closed it on the 20th. I warn anybody not to deal with these people they are very dangerous. My own problem was solved by opening up an account (with no problems) with Secure trust Bank) but i have been left in the lurch by HSBC's actions "0

I know it's not easy for people who are not in the know, but HSBC & Co-Op do operate a 3 strikes and you are out policy - it does say this in the T&C's when you open the account and I can't stress enough how important it really is to read these no matter how boring they might be.
Glad to hear you managed to get everything sorted out in the end with another provider, might be best if you can just get a little buffer sorted out for the future incase any Direct Debits are called early.
Always better to be safe than sorry!David

I am glad you are happy now but before anyone takes out this type of account I would urge them to check if there are any other avenues open to them as Secure Trust is very expensive. £12.50 to open, £12.50 per month fees and 50p every time you use an ATM and as the account is provided with a card which is recognised as a Mastercard credit card (they are not the debit type like Yorkshire Bank) there are some limitations, I don't think you can use them in Aldi (except in Scotland) and Netto if you shop at either of those stores but if you really have exhaused every other avenue I guess it's an option.0 -
Thanks for this thread - I'm about to open a basic account as a step to starting to get out of my debt and away from my current bank, and it's been really helpful to get things straight in my head!
Thanks!Pay off as much as you can in 2011 challenge #116 £394.24/£6722.580 -
Thanks for your basic account help.
Hi everyone, If any one has experience with this problem, advise would be welcome.
My mother a pensioner, opened a current account. had only used it once when she used the overdraft standard facility by £83. she repaid the money two weeks later, but must of been £2 short. as she recently had a letter from them with a £12 charge. Having paid that the charge up to date. she wanted to close the account. as she has never used it. She was told she could not close the account until the 12 January when she will receive another £12 charge. I have never heard of a bank being able to charge you. for having a current account even though there is no money going in or out of the account. Does any one have any advise?????
She only opened the account to try to get a new cooker and already has a basic account with Hailfax.0
