It sounds as though the bank have charged you for the unauthorised overdraft and this charge itself has triggered another unauthorised overdraft fee.0

Thanks for this thread - I'm about to open a basic account as a step to starting to get out of my debt and away from my current bank, and it's been really helpful to get things straight in my head!
Thanks!
Just ever so slightly off topic but is that you in your avatar, Daeheryn? Goodness me, you're pretty!! :smileyhea0 -
i already have a lloyds gold account but was looking to open a new basic account as i recently defaulted a credit card. i have paid all my dues now but still my credit is shot. i was looking to open the citibank access account. do they do full credit checks for a current account or just for a basic one?0

I don't believe that Citibank offer a basic account any more. The references to this earlier in the thread are now several years old and their policy has apparently changed.
They now only have a very small number of branches in London only, and their current accounts are now strictly credit-scored.0 -
Thanks for your basic account help.
Hi everyone, If any one has experience with this problem, advise would be welcome.
My mother a pensioner, opened a current account. had only used it once when she used the overdraft standard facility by £83. she repaid the money two weeks later, but must of been £2 short. as she recently had a letter from them with a £12 charge. Having paid that the charge up to date. she wanted to close the account. as she has never used it. She was told she could not close the account until the 12 January when she will receive another £12 charge. I have never heard of a bank being able to charge you. for having a current account even though there is no money going in or out of the account. Does any one have any advise?????
She only opened the account to try to get a new cooker and already has a basic account with Hailfax.
Some Banks if you go overdrawn this month will charge you next month hence you cannot close it til the charge is applied. Best thing is, is put what you owe now including the charge due in Jan, diarise to call them a day after. Alternatively put a little more in so they cannot gripe.0 -
Hi,
We have a Joint Step Account with Natwest, and have recently moved to Portland where the only bank on the island is a Lloyds TSB, thus are looking to switch accounts to the Cash Account.
Our only concern is the limited use of ATM's, but to overcome this we are thinking of opening an Joint Easy Saver Account, but need verification that the cash card that comes with this can be used in any ATM?
Also can both these accounts be in joint names?
We would also appreciate feedback on internet banking and how easy and quick is it transfer money between the two?
Any feedback on these two accounts is most welcome.0 -
Does the HSBC Basic Bank account (http:// www. hsbc .co .uk/1/2/personal/current-accounts/more/basic-bank-account) charge commission for using the Debit card to make purchases in foreign currencies?
Thanks
Seems I can't post the proper link.0 -

The Easy Saver Account can for sure be opened in Joint Names and the Cash Card can be used in any LINK machine to get around the issue with only being able to use Lloyds TSB Cash Machines.
Very simple to transfer money - Can either do this via Phonebank on the automated service or speak to an adviser or via Internet Banking and takes a few seconds.
Hope this helps!David

If HSBC allow you a Debit Card on the Basic Bank Account, you will be charged as per the Price Guide:

Many thanks, we have an appointment to see the branch manager on Monday to make our application.
I do have one further question if you know the answer -
We had our Natwest Step account for over 5 years, and never once went overdrawn or had any charges - yet because they use credit scoring for upgrade application we have always been declined.
Do you know if it's the same criteria for Lloyds TSB, or do they take behavioural issues in to account?
Thanks again.0
