You've fallen foul of the barclays upsell. I'd call them immediately stressing that you wanted their basic account and that account only.
  • Just reading the T&C's for HSBC and it seems that now it lists the "Basic Bank Account" as either being able to have a "ATM Card or Debit Card" at the banks discretion.

After discussing it with my husband, rather than Co-op we would like a basic account that also has a branch locally which leads me to the Natwest Step account.

My eyes are blurry from searching, but needless to say our credit history is poor and the reason for the basic bank account is a safe haven to put some cash in away from debts we are paying off.

We are fine with ID checks but do Natwest run credit checks for the step account?

Natwest certainly do have a credit check as we have just been declined despite being told by CCCS that it should be ok for us to get this type of account. Back to the drawing board for me now. Next stop Lloyds!
  • I have an account with Natwest and was recently just over £1000 into my overdraft. On saturday i paid in a cheque to my account for £1,100. Will i have my full overdraft amount back when this cheque clears or is it something you can only use once?

Yes, I'll confirm that... Just tried switching from RBS to NatWest as I really don't want anything to do with Santander, was initially told by Nat West I was accepted, filled all the paperwork in to transfer funds, direct debits etc over and find that this morning my RBS account has been closed and Nat West have refused to open the new account for me, citing credit checks and 'management decision' as the reason...
Unfortunately, my money due to be paid in this morning is nowhere to be seen plus all my direct debits are just on the verge of bouncing...

    I hate banks...

Oh dear, bad luck. I don't know if you are aware but RBS actually own NatWest so either will have full information on account conduct, deposit history etc. Attempting to transfer from RBS to NatWest is a bit like trying to open another RBS account at a different branch.

There have been reports of people opening RBS accounts, receiving approval and being given account numbers etc only to then receive a further notice of decline, it would appear they give an initial approval but subsequently do a RBS group wide search which might explain what happenned to you as no doubt NatWest have similar procedures.
  • I would stay well clear of halifax basic account, they allowed a company to take £115 out of my account with my debit card leaving me overdrawn. They wont do anything about it because I gave the company the card details, even though before i opened the account, they assured me it wont be able to get overdrawn.
    £109 halifax :j
  • Can you apply for any basic bank accounts online?? If so which ones?? I havent got the time to go into branch??
