Car problem - something has fallen off mine :(

Hi.

This IS a serious post, and please also excuse the lack of pictures.

About a month ago, I reversed my Ford Fiesta out of the garage and there was a right clanging noise. I jumped out and saw a 4 inch black metal "half-circle" shaped tube/rod and assumed some loutish kids on this estate had just thrown it and it hit the car (it was a right clanging noise) and legged it.

Thought nothing more, but put the metal tubing piece in the garage.

Putting the car away last night I noticed another almost identical black, rusty ended metal tube on the garage floor underneath near the front left of the car. The previous one that I assumed someone threw was under the back right of the car......

I really don't know what they are, but they are worrying me as to what they are and how come they have now apparently snapped off..... frown.gif

Imagine a black metal hoop, then cut in in two, and thats what each piece is, a 1cm thick 'C' shaped curve 'tube' of metal, but now there's two of 'em...

Anyone any idea? Will try and post a photo when my g/friend returns with her digital camera but it's terrifying me!

We just came back from the Lake District and went over lots of really bad, deep potholes (hidden under 2-3 inches of surface water) on country lanes. Don't see how a pothole could make something snap off underneath the car though..... and previously some really bad high speed bumps (slowly) when in Liverpool. Come to think of it, the dashboard really rattles/vibrates when driving.....

Sorry my lack of car knowledge is so embarrassingly non-existant!

Try wobbling your exhaust about - could be the hangers have gone.

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

No idea personally but it may be a good idea to get onto one of the Fiesta forums where you should be able to put some pictures up.

They sound like pretty beefy pieces of steel.

Wow, collapses in amazement at the fast responses, cheers fivetide and everyone else :)

Will go take a look tonight.

I have found a similar thread about Fiesta's on here, here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2355681

I thought it could have been the blackish metal looking hoop from the top right photo here:

    but the ends aren't threaded

    :wall:

EDIT: Sorry, bit slow today. You mean it could be those but they fell off as they snapped off, hence the missing threaded ends?!

    ^^ Possible if overtightened......

But if so, it would mean your exhaust sections ares now not held together, they'd be leaking exhaust gas and could just snap apart at any moment leaving a nice gouge in the road and lots of pretty sparks......

Those things do rust like a bstrd so it's possible that they've rusted through. It'd be pretty clear to see the marks on the exhaust where they've come from if that's the case.

And as Strider said your exhaustl might be a bit loose.

Jeez, that's scared the smile off my face trying to be lighthearted :(

I will try and get some photo's taken tonight, or at least take a look underneath.

    Thank you so much.

Here's hoping it's not gonna cost me £200 to get sorted...
