Hammy- as a mechanic what price for change of front discs on this car? Also would Kwik fit use top of the range parts or cheapest that they can fit? £144 seems awful dear to me. And there is no evidence that this work is required which is the crux of this thread.

uniparts. they use or lucas. cheapest there is. they would pay around £12 per disc.

master cyl they would probably get at £18.00 plus vat.

wheel cyl they would get for around £4.00

and brake pipe for around 5.99 plus dreaded.

yes, £38 for pair of front discs. So assuming fit are using similar discs £100 for labour and I believe that a disc swap is a very easy job. (It is on my saxo, anyway.)

Needless to say I picked my car up from Kwik Fit and when I drove it home it made a strange clunking sound which it didn't before hand.

Did you check your wheel nuts?

    It's a Renault Scenic (R reg)

Hammyman, insulting my car doesn't quite have the impact I'm sure you're trying to achieve. But to be fair, nothing you say does.

Good try though, bless you x

Not insulting your car (my Megane's a P reg so I'm in the same boat), but it's really at the age now where the economics of keeping it kick in with a vengeance. I've had mine from new and the only major and expensive problem was a seized aircon compressor 4 years ago. However, over the last 3 weeks it's been one thing after another. New coil packs which I did myself - parts cost £66. Last week the heater/cooling fan stopped working. That's a dashboard top off job assuming it's the resistor that's gone (fuse is OK) so at least 2 hours labour plus parts there. Also, sudden extra footbrake travel. Add the sundry scrapes, rusty rear wheel arches and tailgate and likely further expense for the MOT in 4 months time and I'm pouring money into a 14 year old car that can only get worse. I'll be sorry to see it go but I bit the bullet today and ordered a 10 month old new shape Megane 1.6VVT Dynamique TomTom from Renault. They'll take the old one off my hands for £280 tradein which is fair given age and condition and I won't have the hassle of selling it with potential come backs when it goes wrong again (which it will!). If I get 14 years out of this one I'll be well-pleased.

An MOT only lasts at the time of testing. If a fault arises next day there is nothing that can be done.

No, if it's something that should not have failed and can be shown to have been there at the time of the MOT (for example rust) you can sue the MOT station for the full cost of repairing the fault.

It was something to do with the rear brake spring and the rim - still don't know how it happened though

The master cylinder had failed. The car was completely incapable of being brought to anything more than a gentle stop even from 10MPH no matter how hard you stamped on the brakes or if you pumped the pedal. It was incapable of even having to brake moderately hard. The brakes were completely incapable of stopping the wheel rotating.

    <SNIP arrogant drivel>

    GET IT NOW?

If I was the OP I would have driven to KF and driven away from KF. But I think I would have enough common sense to chose my route and speed accordingly and avoid any 1 in 8 hills :rotfl:

Jeez you holier than thou nannies really are bunch of arrogant butt cavities

I do have to say that Kwik Fit branches must vary a lot. I have had two cars MOT'd at the local Amersham KF (reduced price of £35) and both passed with a couple of advisories. I do try to check them over beforehand, but no attempt to rip me off.

now go back for another mot at kwikfit but this time in bra and knickers.

Any ideas what's the average hourly rate, and how long to put a metal brake pipe/fluid in?
£30 - £60 an hour, maybe more at a main dealers. Don't know how long to do that though sorry.
